Walker's Pace: Try the Veal; Tip Your Waiter

Sunday, November 21, 2010, 5:45 p.m.

Sunday was course jog and press conference day at the 2010 NCAA Championships. It also turned into an opportunity for Luke Puskedra to work on his stand-up routine.

The Ducks got some light work in at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course, which is in excellent condition and as dry as anyone could recall in recent memory. If the showers forecast for Monday are not too heavy or frequent, it could be a very fast course on Monday.

Following a jog, strides and stretches at the course, Associate Athletic Director Vin Lananna, Jordan Hasay and Puskedra headed to the requisite pre-championships press conference, where Puskedra had a little fun with the questions.

Asked if he had been working on anything specifically to prepare for the race. Puskedra answered his 100 meter sprint. "I ran 12.3 the other day; running start," dead-panned Puskedra. By the way, Luke and the rest of the racers will be running 100, 100 meter "sprints," or 10,000 meters on Monday.

Asked about what he would do to improve the popularity of the sport, Puskedra mentioned the high television ratings received by golf and suggested a combination of the two - "speed golf." He might be on to something; it's a real sport, though you might only be able to see it on ESPN8 - the "Ocho."

On a serious note, the Ducks learned ther starting box assignments on Sunday. The women will go out of box nine, while the men go from box seven. That means if you are watching the live webcast on www.ncaa.org, the yellow-clad Ducks will be on the right side of your computer screen.

Remember, the women's race starts at 9:08 a.m. PST (12:08 p.m. EST) and the men go at 9:48 a.m. PST (12:48 p.m. EST).

Below are some photos from the weekend, including the course jog, press conference and NCAA banquet, where Jordan Hasay received her West Regional athlete of the year award.
