No. 20 Ducks' Season Ends at NCAA Southeast Regional
Release Date: 05/21/2011
The 20th-ranked Ducks, who were the fourth seed in the Southeast Regional hosted by Florida, saw their team score rise in each of the final two rounds of the 54-hole qualifying tournament, missing out on the top five finish necessary to advance to the finals with a disappointing tie for tenth.
After entering the final round at even par and six strokes out of the top five, UO shot 9-over 297 on Saturday to share tenth place with another team expected to contend for advancement in sixth-seeded Central Florida.
The No. 5 Gators ran away with the regional title with an 11-under performance to finish at 18-under, six strokes clear of defending NCAA champion No. 6 Augusta State. Kennesaw State placed third at 11-under, followed by North Carolina State at 9-under and No. 17 Arkansas at 8-under.
Those five schools will advance to the NCAA championships, May 31-June 5, at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla.
UO's No. 3 Andrew Vijarro was the only Duck to place in the top 25 among individuals, tying for 17th at 2-under. The junior all-conference selection from Bend shot 3-over 75 in the final round -- his lone round over par.
Senior Jack Dukeminier, who led after the opening round at 6-under, finished his collegiate career with a tie for 29th at 2-over.
The biggest surprise among the Oregon contingent was the play of All-American Daniel Miernicki, who never got on track at the Golden Ocala Golf and Equestrian Club. The U.S. Palmer Cup representative need to hole out for eagle on the par 4 ninth - his final hole of the tourney - for a third-round 74 and tie for 54th at 9-over.
Oregon's former No. 1 Eugene Wong, who played as the team's No. 4 this week, tied for 42nd at 5-over. No. 5 Jack Paton tied for 47th at 6-over.
With the close of the 2010-11 season, the Ducks have enjoyed their most successful five-year run in program history under fifth-year head coach Casey Martin. UO tied for first at this year's Pac-10 team championship before falling in a sudden-death playoff, and placed third at the NCAAs in 2010.
