EUGENE – Boasting one of its deepest rosters ever, the University of Oregon volleyball team was rewarded with votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association national preseason poll for the fourth straight season.

The Ducks received 85 votes – the third-best tally outside the top 25 – and were one of seven Pac-12 teams ranked or receiving votes.

Returning semifinalist USC was tabbed second, and returning national runner-up California followed in third place. Two other league teams – No. 6 Stanford and No. 7 Washington – ranked top 10; No. 11 UCLA also stood top 12; and Arizona received votes.

Overall in the poll, four-time defending national champion Penn State led the rankings for the eighth straight edition, and the other two teams in the top five included No. 4 Texas and No. 5 Nebraska.

Glancing at Oregon’s 2011 schedule, the Nittany Lions will host the Ducks in the teams’ season opener, the AVCA Collegiate Showcase, Friday, August 26 in State College, Pa. The Ducks will face two more foes in 2011 that were sighted Monday – No. 12 Minnesota and Cal Poly.

Last year the Ducks ran their school record top-25 poll run to 59 straight editions, then received votes the last two editions en route to a 19-11 record. Before the arrival of seventh-year head coach Jim Moore, Oregon’s previous longest poll streak was a 28-week run from 1986-88.

The year before, UO ranked 24th twice the season in 2006 – Moore’s second campaign in Eugene – in late October and early November.
