EUGENE, Ore.- The University of Oregon men's tennis team begins dual competition this week with a doubleheader against Portland State and Montana State on Friday (Jan.20). Action is slated to begin at 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. from the Student Tennis Center.
For the No. 72 Ducks, Portland State and Montana State, this will be the first action of the season for all three programs since the fall slate.
UO had a solid fall season by capturing three doubles titles and one singles title. Junior Jeff Mullen and sophomore Robin Cambier tallied two of those doubles titles while Jose Izquierdo and junior Aaron Clissold accounted for the other title. Clissold also notched a singles title at the PNW Intercollegiates hosted by Oregon.
The Ducks finished 11-11 last season with six players posting double digits in the win column. Leading the way for UO was Cambier, who had the best finish with a 21-13 record in his first season as a Duck. Cambier also combined with then-freshman Alex Rovello to post a 12-10 tally in doubles competition, earning the duo a trip to the Pac-10 Championships.
In all, Oregon sent six to the Pac-10 Championships and will look to expand that number or match it as all six return to the courts for the Ducks this season.
The Vikings went 5-13 last season and 2-6 in Big Sky competition. The top returner for PSU is former Oregon player Mitch Somach, who finished the season 9-9 overall and 5-3 in the Big Sky. Somach earned All-Big Sky honorable mention.
The Bobcats finished at 9-14 last season and were 5-4 in the Big Sky.
A full recap with statistics from each match will be available following action from the Student Tennis Center on the UO athletics website, www.goducks.com.
