TEMPE, Ariz. - Freshman Hannah Melick ripped a two-run, pinch-hit double in the seventh inning, and lifted the No. 11 University of Oregon softball team (3-2) to a 5-4 win over San Diego State to cap action in the Kajikawa Classic Sunday.

The returning NCAA tournament advancer Aztecs (3-3) either tied or led most of the way until the seventh, when junior second baseman Kaylan Howard started UO's rally with a single up the middle. Sophomore catcher Alexa Peterson followed with a bunt single to the left side of the infield, and both runners advanced to second and third base on a high wild pitch on a 2-1 count.

Immediately after, Oregon head coach Mike White substituted in Melick, and the Pacific, Wash., native lined the first pitch into the left field gap for her first game-winning RBI.

SDSU spoiled an otherwise strong effort from junior pitcher Jessica Moore with a pair of homers early in the game. The first two-run shot to right field by Lorea Klopp in the first inning gave SDSU a 2-0 lead. Two innings later, Haley Miles added a solo round-tripper to right field and re-tied the game, 3-3. Its final run came in the fourth inning when after a throwing error by the shortstop and sacrifice bunt, Fiana Finau lined an RBI single.

The All-Pac-12 returnee Moore (2-2) pitched her second complete game of the season, struck out five, walked four, allowed four hits, and three of her four runs allowed were earned.

UO scored its first three runs in the second inning, after freshman left fielder Sara Goodrum started the stanza with an infield single to shortstop. UO proceeded to load the bases wth two outs on sophomore third baseman Courtney Ceo's bunt single and an error by the pitcher on freshman Janie Takeda's grounder and a bases-loaded walk to senior shortstop Kelsey Chambers. Sophomore first baseman Kailee Cuico followed with a 2-RBI single on an 11-pitch at-bat.

On the mound for SDSU, starter Rebecca Arbino pitched the first three innings, struck out two, walked two, allowed six hits, and one of her three runs allowed were earned. Kamerin May followed her and pitched the fourth inning, gave up two hits, one walk and struck out none. Returning Easton Third-Team All-American Bailey Micetich (2-1) pitched the final two innings, struck out three, walked none, gave up four hits, and both runs allowed were earned.

For the Aztecs at the plate, four different hitters hit safely once.

The preceding two days in the tourney, UO staked eight-run, five-inning wins over UC Santa Barbara, 10-2, and San Jose State, 9-0, and lost to New Mexico, 7-6, and NCAA Super Regional returnee BYU, 2-1.

"Coming in we were hoping to go 4-1 or better ths weekend," Oregon head coach Mike White said, "but the New Mexico setback helped cost us a shot at that. That was a tough loss, and after the BYU game the next morning, our backs were against the wall. Freshman Karissa Hovinga picked up with a shutout and boosted both her's and the team's confidence. We took another step today against a very good San Diego State team. We played good defense, attacked them offensively - especially with our slappers - and never gave up to get a key win. We still have areas we need to work on, but we finished the weekend on a good note."

For the five games combined, five hitters topped .400 - junior left fielder Allie Burger (.571, 4-for-7, 2 BB), Melick (.500, 3-for-6, 1 2B, 3 RBI), Ceo (.471, 8-for-17, 1 HR, 3 RBI), Howard (.467, 7-for-15, 1 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBI) and Kelsey Chambers (.467, 7-for-15, 2 2B, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 3 BB). Four others topped .300 - junior right fielder Samantha Pappas (.385, 5-for-13, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RB), Goodrum (.375, 3-for-8), Peterson (.364, for-11, 2 BB) and Takeda (.333, 5-for-15, 1 BB, 2 SB).

On the mound, Moore (2-2) logged a 2.16 ERA, went 2-2, struck out 19, walked 12, allowed 22 hits in 22 innings, and seven of her 10 runs allowed were earned. Freshman Karissa Hovinga (1-0) worked the team's remaining eight innings, struck out seven, walked four, gave up 11 hits in eight innings, and four of her five runs allowed were earned.

During the weekend, Moore (2-1) climbed UO all-time lists in career strikeouts (second, 481), wins (eighth, 42) and complete games (10th, 33), and senior shortstop Kelsey Chambers moved up on career offensive charts in homers (sixth, 28) and RBI (10th, 100).

Looking ahead, UO has a week off before it returns to action the following weekend against another impressive field in the Cathedral City Classic, February 24-26, near Palm Springs, Calif. UO will face returning World Series advancer in Oklahoma State, two more NCAA tourney returnees in Nebraska and New Mexico State and also Cal Poly and Northwestern.
