NASHVILLE – The University of Oregon continued its hottest start since the baseball program was reinstated in 2009, beating No. 17 Vanderbilt, 7-6, on Sunday at Hawkins Field to sweep the three-game series with the Commodores (1-6) and extend its winning streak to seven games.
Aaron Jones’ two-run double in the sixth capped a four-run inning to put the Ducks (7-1) on top 7-5, and Jimmie Sherfy pitched out of multiple jams over the final three innings to earn his second save.
Oregon starter Brando Tessar (2-0) became the squad’s first two-game winner, tossing five innings and allowing five runs – two earned – on seven hits and four walks while striking out four.
Tommy Thorpe and Sherfy did the rest, with Sherfy fanning four and working around five bases on balls over the final 2 and 2/3 innings.
The Ducks got off to a strong start with two runs in the first on Ryon Healy’s double and a solo home run from Scott Heineman in the second to make it 3-0.
The Dores responded with a pair of runs in their half of the second, two more in the fourth due in part to UO’s first error of the series, and another unearned run in the fifth after the frame was extended due to catcher’s interference.
Sherfy uncorked a wild pitch with runners on second and third and one out in the 9th, scoring a run, before sandwiching a pair of strikeouts around a free pass.
Aaron Payne had a game-high three hits, going 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Jones and Heineman finished with two hits apiece.
Mike Yastrzemski, who led off the ninth with a double and eventually scored, and Connor Castellano paced Vanderbilt with two hits each.
The Ducks next play Tuesday against the University of Portland at PK Park. The home opener is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
