EUGENE, Ore.- The No. 38 University of Oregon men's tennis team picked up their 10th win of the 2012 campaign by defeating Radford University, 5-2, Monday night at the Student Tennis Center.
The Ducks (10-1) swept doubles play and won four out of the six singles matches.
"I feel like we came out flat today," said head coach Nils Schyllander. "But we found a way to grind through. We need to make sure to play with more energy from the start."
Oregon increased its combined doubles record to 31-2 with the sweep. Daniel Sardu and Aaron Clissold soundly defeated the Radford (7-2) doubles team of Patrick O'Keefe and Randall Carter, 8-4. Alex Rovello and Jose Izquierdo overpowered the Stijn Meulemans and Igor Ogrizek duo with an 8-6 win, clinching the doubles series. Duo Jeff Mullen and Robin Cambier battled with Radford's Nichols Sayer and Thomas Dehaen to secure the sweep with a 9-8 win.
In singles, both Mullen and Sardu overpowered their opponents. Mullen defeated Ogrizek 6-2, 6-2 and Sardu beat Dehaen 6-2, 6-0.
"I was happy with the way Daniel (Sardu) played tonight," said Schyllander. "He got that second point really quick, which gave the team a lot of confidence."
The match that highlighted the night, however, was Izquierdo vs. Joe Mills. After being down 4-1 in the first set, Izquierdo powered his way to a 7-6 victory. The second set was also extremely contentious, in which Izquierdo lost, 4-6. The third set went to tiebreak points, where Izquierdo defeated Mills 10-8 to win the final set 7-6.
The Ducks will face Weber State this Saturday, March 10 at the Student Tennis Center in Eugene, Ore. at noon.
