EUGENE, Ore. – All good things must come to an end, and on Friday night at PK Park, Illinois snapped No. 17 Oregon’s 10-game win streak with a 2-1 victory at the Nike College Showcase.
Right-hander Kevin Johnson (2-1) tossed a one-run complete game, holding the Ducks (10-2) to a season-low four hits while striking out five.
Oregon right-hander Alex Keudell (1-2) was the tough-luck loser, allowing just two runs in eight innings of work. He surrendered six hits and struck out six.
The Fighting Illini (5-5) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth as Jordan Parr drove a two-out triple into deep center field, and Reid Roper came around to score from first. It was Roper who kept the inning alive with a two-out single.
Oregon took the first lead of the game in the second as Ryon Healy hammered Johnson’s first offering into left field. Kyle Garlick then knocked him in with a one-out double to left.
Illinois evened the score in the top of the fourth as Davis Hendrickson’s fielder’s choice allowed Roper to score.
In the first game of the day at PK Park, despite surrendering four runs in the bottom of the ninth, Connecticut held on for the 8-7 upset of No. 22 Oklahoma.
The Nike College Showcase resumes tomorrow with the first game of the day at 11 a.m. as West Virginia and Illinois square off. The Ducks will play the final two games of the day, hosting West Virginia at 3 pm and No.22 Oklahoma at 7pm.
Notes: The Ducks four hits were a new season low…in Oregon’s only other loss this season, UO’s offense was also held to one run (4-1 at Hawai’i on Feb. 17).
