Ducks Take Sixth;Wong Places 5th in Santa Cruz Finale

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The No. 11 University of Oregon men's golf team placed sixth in the Western Intercollegiate finale Sunday, while senior Eugene Wong (72-69-69-210) tied for fifth individually to pace the Ducks.

On the par-70, 6,615-yard Pasatiempo course, No. 11 Oregon shot its best score of the tourney in the finale (sixth, 369-373-361-1103) with an 11-over score in Sunday's round.

The North Vancouver, B.C. native led UO in a tournament in the final standings for the fifth time among the team's nine stroke play events in 2011-12.

He also paced UO for the 14th time in a round this season Sunday with his one-under 69, and that score marked his 18th at par or better on the campaign and 76th time career-wise (second-best all-time for Oregon).

Senior Daniel Miernicki also shot a one-under 69 Sunday to follow two strokes back in the overall standings (ninth-tie, 73-70-69-212). He posted his third straight top-10 finish of the season and fifth overall, while his one-under score was his 17th at par or better this season and school-record 81st of his career.

Freshman Jonathan Woo followed in a tie for 42nd place (69-82-73-224) in his first team appearance for the squad.

UO's other entrants included senior Andrew Vijarro (50th-tie, 75-75-77-227), redshirt junior Robbie Ziegler (58th-tie, 80-77-73-230) and freshman Rak Cho (86th, 81-83-83-247).

In the overall team results, No. 1 Texas won by four strokes (355-349-356-1060) with its 10-over score.

No. 14 Stanford followed in second place (353-360-351-1064), and the other teams in the top five included No. 6 UCLA (third, 351-364-352-1067), No. 5 USC (fourth, 358-364-367-1089) and No. 4 California (fifth, 364-371-365-1100).

The event featured one more top-10 team that ended 18 strokes behind NO. 11 UO - No. 10 San Diego State (seventh, 369-379-373-1121).

Stanford freshman Patrick Rodgers won the event with a four-under 206 (67-71-68) by a two-stroke margin.

Two players tied for second place - UCLA's Patrick Cantlay (69-71-68-208) and New Mexico State's Justin Shin (68-69-71-208).

Looking ahead, UO looks ahead to its last event of the regular season next weekend, the Aggie Invitational, Saturday-Sunday, April 21-22 in College Station, Texas.

Afterwards, the Ducks head to the Pac-12 Championships, Friday-Sunday, April 27-29, at the Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis, Ore.
