SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 15 University of Oregon softball (27-9, 6-5) won its fifth straight series opener with a 9-0 blanking of Utah (23-16, 0-10) Friday afternoon at Ute Field.

In the circle for UO, freshman Karissa Hovinga (8-3) posted her third shutout of the season to tie for the team lead with All-Pac-12 returnee Jessica Moore.

The Ralston, Neb., native Hovinga struck out six, walked four and scattered allowed five hits to notch her first league win and seventh complete game overall.

The Ducks owned a 14-5 hit margin, and en route to single runs in the second and third innings, three runs in the fifth, and two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Oregon's sixth shutout of the season also stood as its second in league play.

Junior right fielder Samantha Pappas continued her recent tear at the plate with a three-run homer in the fifth inning - her fourth round-tripper of the season and third the last five games. Her batting average is equally paltry the last seven contests with a .450 mark (9-for-20) to go along with 10 RBI.

In the second inning, sophomore catcher Alexa Peterson connected on her second game-winning RBI the last three games with an RBI single to the right side. The batter before, senior Christie Nieto, doubled down the right field line - her sixth two-base hit of the season in only 56 at-bats (and all after the opening month).

In the third, senior Kelsey Chambers doubled in UO's second run after sophomore Courtney Ceo opened the inning with a single. Chambers' two-bagger was her team-leading 17th extra-base hit of the season and gives her 34th career doubles to move into a tie for seventh all-time for Oregon.

In the fifth inning, Pappas' three-run homer knocked in Ceo and junior Kaylan Howard who had walked to start the inning.

In the sixth, UO added its next two runs thanks to aggressive base-running by senior Lindsey Chambers and Kaylan Howard who scored on a wild pitch and steal of home, respectively. The pair had reached via a two-out walk and single, and the latter also swiped second base for her fourth stolen base of the season.

In the seventh, Oregon's freshman trio of pinch-hitters Jamie Rae Sullivan and Sara Goodrum and center fielder Janie Takeda singled to load the bases with one out. Lindsey Chambers followed with a two-run double - her fifth hit in her last eight at-bats - for Oregon's final runs of the game.

En route to her third multi-hit effort the last four contests, Nieto (3-for-3) celebrated her first three-hit game of the season. The Las Flores, Calif., native also set a team season high for doubles in a game (2) with her other opening the fourth inning.

Two other Ducks rapped multiple hits - Ceo (2-for-2, walk) and Howard (2-for-4, walk).

Ceo also stole a pair of bases for the second time in four games and raised her season total to 10, and moved into a tie for the team lead with Pappas.

Utah starting pitcher and senior Generra Nielson (17-12), pitched the first six innings, struck out three, walked four, allowed 10 hits, and all seven runs allowed were earned. Freshman Mariah Ramirez pitched the final inning, struck out one, walked none, gave up four hits, and both runs allowed were earned.

The Ute's best chance to score came in the fifth inning when its 1-2 hitters Kelsi Hoopiiaina and Tia Palauni walked to open the inning. After a strikeout of Whitney Holm, a walk loaded the bases, but Hovinga bounced back to force a pop-out to the shortstop and handled a line-out herself to end the threat.

Utah also left two runners in the second inning after a one-out walk and single, but Hovinga forced a fielder's choice and line-out to Takeda in center field.

The past three weeks, UO also won its first games of series vs. four current top-25 league rivals (with current rankings and scores included) - No. 23 Oregon State (8-2), No. 3 Arizona State (3-0), No. 15 Stanford (8-5) and No. 7 Washington (5-3).

Friday's outcome also marked Oregon's fifth straight decision in the series with the Utes dating back to 2007, and last two coming under third-year head coach Mike White in 2010 (4-2) and '11 (8-5 (9 innings).

Looking ahead, UO has single games against Utah on Saturday and Sunday that will start at 3 p.m. and 11 a.m. Pacific Time, respectively.
