EUGENE – The No. 14 University of Oregon softball team (31-10, 8-6) dropped its first league series opener of the season Friday night to No. 1 California (41-2, 12-1) by an 8-1 count.

Junior pitcher Jessica Moore (21-7) pitched the first four innings and none of the five runs she allowed were earned. The returning All-Pac-12 right-hander struck out five, walked two and allowed five hits, while the Ducks committed an error behind her in both Cal’s one-run first inning and five-run fourth.

Duck freshman Karissa Hovinga pitched the final three innings, struck out none, walked three, and allowed two hits and two earned runs.

Moore’s appearance was her 114th career-wise for UO and moved her into a tie for eighth all-time with Susan Voeller.

At the plate for UO, four batters hit safely once – junior Kaylan Howard, senior Kelsey Chambers, sophomore Alexa Peterson and freshman Sara Goodrum.

Oregon scored its lone run in the third inning after Goodrum led off with a single, advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt and infield ground-out, then scored on a single by Chambers.

The RBI stood as the 130th career-wise for the Concord, Calif., native Chambers who already ranked fifth all-time, and is now six behind the fourth-best Duck mark (Jill Robinson, 136).

For the returning World Series returning Bears, returning Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year and junior right-hander Jolene Henderson (23-1) struck out eight, walked one, allowed four hits, and her run allowed was earned.

Offensively for Cal – which staked a Duck opponent season high eight runs - Jace Williams led the way with a 3-for-4 day. Four other Bear players had single hits.

Cal struck for its first run in the first when lead-off hitter Jamia Reid reached on a throwing error by Moore on a comeback grounder. The USA Player of the Year candidate advanced to third on a stolen base, then scored on a ground-out after a missed tag at the plate.

The Bears scored five more runs in the fourth inning, and all with two outs. After a one-out single, an errant throw to second base on a fielder’s choice put a second runner on. Moore followed with a strikeout, but Cal answered with two doubles and a triple en route to unearned runs.

Hovinga came in to pitch a scoreless fifth inning. However, in the sixth, she gave up a two-run homer to Williams after she walked the opening batter.

The Bears entered the game with only one conference loss on the season against No. 12 Arizona (8-3) last weekend, and its other at the hands of No. 14 Hawai’i (3-1) in mid-March.

Conversely, UO had won its first league series tilts the past month at Oregon State (8-2), vs. then-No. 5 Arizona State (3-0), at then-No. 14 Stanford (8-5), vs. then-No. 7 Washington (5-3) and at Utah (9-0).

Looking ahead, the two teams return for single games on Saturday at 5 p.m. and Sunday at noon, respectively.

Promotions-wise, Saturday’s game offers free admission with a ticket stub from the baseball game vs. Washington State. On Sunday, fans that donate e-waste items will receive a $3 general admission ticket.
