EUGENE - The No. 14 University of Oregon softball team (31-11, 9-6) toppled its second top-ranked opponent under head coach Mike White with its 1-0 win over No. 1 California (41-3, 12-2) in the second game of the series Saturday at Howe Field.
Junior Jessica Moore (22-7) needed only 92 pitches to post her 21st complete game of the season, and her 22nd win moved her to sixth all-time for UO for victories in a campaign. Altogether, the returning All-Pac-12 pick walked one, allowed only four hits and her eight strikeouts raised her season tally to 175 - fifth-most for Oregon ever.
"The difference for me today was that I was got ahead of the hitters much better," Moore said," and my pitch counts were low. Yesterday I was a little bit out of the strike zone, but today I was able to control the game better. Even though we had an error, it wasn’t that big of a deal, and our teammates picked each other up.”
Facing a team that ranked top six nationally in nearly every offensive category, Moore dispatched her sixth Pac-12 foe on the season, and notched her seventh win over a top-25 team this year.
“We have nothing to lose this weekend," Moore said. "They were are ranked No. 1, so we just came out and played, and tried to stay as relaxed as possible.”
Saturday's game made up for a frustrating effort on Friday - an 8-1 loss. She pitched the first four innings, struck out five, walked two and allowed five hits, while none of the five runs she allowed were earned due to a pair of errors.
"Jess did a better job of getting ahead today, and that made it easier on the defense," White said. "Today proved that we can beat good teams, and that we have a pitcher who can lead the way.”
For Cal, starter Valerie Arioto (18-2) suffered only her second loss of the season. The Golden Bear struck out two, walked one, allowed five hits, and one earned run.
Both teams were hitless through the first three innings, before Arioto stroked a single to left field.
The next Golden Bear batter, Breana Kosteba, followed with a grounder to shortstop, and after an errant throw to first base, Cal had runners on second and third base with two outs. Moore answered the challenge with a strikeout of the Bears' #5 hitter Danielle Henderson in a nine-pitch at-bat.
UO added its first hit in the bottom of the fourth on back-to-back singles by senior Kelsey Chambers and sophomore Kailee Cuico. However, an infield grounder ended the inning.
In the sixth inning, Oregon finally broke the scoreless tie after junior Kaylan Howard opened the inning with a single off the right center field wall. Freshman Janie Takeda advanced her to second base on a sacrifice bunt, and a pitch in the dirt allowed Howard to narrowly beat the catcher’s throw to third base. Cuico followed with a lined single to right field for her fifth game-winning RBI of the season - third-most on the team.
Cal put its lead-off hitter on in the seventh inning, but Moore coaxed two ground-outs and a strikeout of Elia Reid to end the game with a runner on third base.
For the contest, four Ducks hit safely - Cuico (2-for-3, RBI), Howard (1-for-3), Chambers (1-for-3) and Peterson (1-for-2).
Cal also had four players hit safely once - lead-off hitter Jamia Reid, Arioto, Henderson and Reid.
The returning World Series advancers nearly had a fifth hit after Jace Williams lined a shot towards the left field wall in the sixth inning, and right after Reid had singled via a bunt to open the inning.
However, junior left fielder Allie Burger - a defensive substitute moments before - made a running, over-the-shoulder catch, then fired to Chambers at shortstop who stepped on second base for the double play. Reid had raced past second base on the play, and on her bee line back to first base hadn't re-tagged second base.
Saturday's win came two years after Oregon's first top-ranked upset under its third-year mentor White - a 4-0 win over then-No. 1 Washington at Howe Field on April 17, 2010. Prior to that, UO's prior win over a No. 1 team came in 2004 vs. Arizona when White served as an assistant coach.
“The difference today was Jess (Jessica) Moore and our defense," Moore said. "After that infield error in the fourth, I went to the circle and told the infielders that I didn't want one play to define this game. I'm proud of how our players picked each other up all day - they fought the whole game and were led by Jess. Our next goal is to get consistency with our defense and pitching so they catch up with our hitting.”
Looking ahead, the two teams seeded first and third in the Pac-12 play a final game Sunday at noon.
