CORVALLIS, Ore. - Thanks to a tourney-leading, 16-under third round, the No. 11 University of Oregon men's golf team sported a four-stroke lead after the Pac-12 Championships' third round, while seniors Eugene Wong and Daniel Miernicki were tied for the individual lead Saturday.
With one round remaining Sunday morning, the Ducks (364-358-344-1066) stood at 14-under after Saturday, and owned a four-stroke lead over No. 2 UCLA (second, 367-352-351-1070).
No. 6 California (359-365-348-1072) followed in third place with an eight-under tourney total, and host Oregon State (36-2365-353) and No. 5 USC (368-356-356-1080) were tied for fourth place at all even.
Two other teams in the field ranked top 13 nationally this week - No. 9 Stanford (sixth, 373-360-350-1083) and No. 13 Washington (eighth, 368-366-369-1103).
Individually on the par-72 Trysting Tree Golf Course, Miernicki (68-72-66-206) tied the second-best best round of the tourney Saturday to join Wong (69-68-69-206) atop the leaderboard with their 10-under scores.
Likewise, Wong shot his 22nd par or better score in 2011-12, and 80th career-wise (second-best all-time for the Ducks).
Miernicki posted seven birdies Saturday on holes #1, 4, 9, 11, 14, 15 and 17 - Oregon's high in the tourney. The former All-Pac-12 honoree also posted 10 par scores and only one bogey (on hole 12).
Wong carded five birdies Saturday for the third straight round, thanks to his under-par scores on holes #3, 6, 8, 11 and 13. The former Nicklaus Award national top golfer honoree added 11 par scores and only two bogeys (on holes 4 and 15).Stanford's Andrew Yun (68-70-69-207) followed one stroke back in second place at nine-under. The UCLA pair of Patrick Cantlay (69-70-71-210) and Pedro Figueiredo (71-69-71-211) followed in fourth and fifth places, respectively.
Among UO's other scores, redshirt junior Robbie Ziegler (19th-tie, 72-74-71-217) carded his second round of par or better in the tourney, 10th of the season and 39th in his career.
Senior Andrew Vijarro (29th-tie, 79-72-68-219) tied his best round of the season, and his four-under total was one shy of his career best. The Bend, Ore., native also enjoyed his 15th score of par or better this season and 55th career-wise (third-best for the Ducks ever).
Freshman Jonathan Woo (42nd-tie, 77-76-70-223) added his first under-par score of the tourney and third among his 15 rounds on the campaign.
Sophomore Ben Itterman (56th-tie, 78-72-78-228) rounded out UO's entries.
Other birdie/par counts for UO's entries from Saturday's round follow: Vijarro (6/10), Ziegler (4/11), Woo (3/14) and Itterman (1/11).
Looking ahead, action resumes Sunday morning with the first tee times set for 8 a.m. off the first and 10th holes.
