EUGENE - The No. 12 University of Oregon softball team (36-12, 11-8) opened the final two weeks of the regular season with a dramatic doubleheader sweep of Seattle (15-30, 8-12) Wednesday afternoon by scores of 9-8 and 8-0 (5) at Howe Field.

In the first game, Seattle jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning, and still led 6-1 in the fifth and 8-3 in the sixth. However, the Duck bats came alive for a run in the sixth and five more in the seventh to help raise its all-time series record to a perfect 6-0.

"We had different people step up today which is a good thing," Oregon head coach Mike White said, "you can't rely on only one person if you're going to be successful. Karissa (Hovinga) bounced back with a good effort in the second game, and the offense picked her up when it needed to, especially in game two."

Senior Kelsey Chambers' bases-loaded single over the center fielder's head with no outs in the seventh accounted for the winning run, and marked her seventh game-winning RBI of the season.

In the second game, the result was much different as UO won its seventh game of the season in less than seven innings (via the eight-run rule), thanks to a hat trick of homers by senior Christie Nieto, junior Samantha Pappas and sophomore Kailee Cuico.

In the finale, freshman Karissa Hovinga (12-3) pitched her second complete game of the day, struck out one, walked two, and allowed only one hit with two outs in the fourth inning.

In the opener, the Canadian Junior National Team member struck out four, walked four, allowed 10 hits, and all eight runs allowed were earned.

In the second game, UO got on the scoreboard in the second inning with its first run after back-to-back doubles by Pappas and Nieto. The latter player staked her fourth game-winning RBI of the season and boosted her team-leading slugging mark to .704.

In the fourth inning, Pappas added a run-scoring double, followed by a two-run homer by Nieto to center field - her seventh of the season (and all within the last five weeks).

In the fifth, Cuico and Pappas delivered back-to-back homers - two- and one-run shots - to end the contest. Cuico's ninth four-bagger of the 2012 tied her for the team lead and is two shy of the ninth-best mark ever for the Ducks in a season (11).

For the contest, Pappas (3-for-3) enjoyed her third, three-hit game and team-leading 14th multi-hit contest of the season. Nieto (2-for-2, 3 RBI) also hit safely twice.

Seattle starter Richelle Ashburn (4-13), worked the first 3.1 innings, struck out one, walked three, gave up four hits, and all five of her runs allowed were earned. Mandie Sugita pitched the fourth and fifth innings, struck out none, walked one, yielded three hits, and all three of her runs allowed were earned.

The Redhawks' lone batter to hit safely was Brianna Guerrero (1-for-2).

In the first game, Seattle scored its third-highest run total of the season (8 runs), and touched Hovinga for 10 hits.

Conversely, the UO offense accounted for only two hits and one run the first four innings. The latter of which came on a Kelsey Chambers RBI single after junior Kaylan Howard led off with a walk and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt.

In the fifth inning, the Ducks added two runs on a double by sophomore Alexa Peterson down the right field line after two-out walks to Chambers and Nieto and an error by the second baseman on a grounder.

In the sixth, UO's next run came on an RBI single by Janie Takeda up the middle.

In the seventh, the first six batters reached safely via four singles, a walk, and a two-run homer by Peterson. Oregon's last two runs came across on singles by freshman Jamie Rae Sullivan and Chambers.

On other Duck all-time lists at the end of the day, Pappas improved one position on the career walks (ninth, 67-tied ) and home runs (ninth-tied, 25) charts, as did Cuico on the season RBI list (ninth-tied, 44).

Seattle starter Richelle Asburn pitched the first two innings, struck out one, walked three, allowed one hit and one earned run in her two innings. Jessica Ulrich worked the next four innings, struck out three, walked four, yielded seven hits, and four of her six runs allowed were earned. Mandie Sugita (5-8) took the loss and faced the last five batters, retired none of them, walked one, and allowed three hits and two earned runs.

At the plate for the Seahawks, three batters collected multiple hits - Bubba Morrow (2-for-4, HR, 1 RBI), Brianna Guerrero (2-for-3) and Allegra Wilde (2-for-4, 2 RBI). Theresa Clark added the team's other round-tripper - a two-run shot in the second inning.

Looking ahead, UO welcomes returning World Series advancer and No. 9 Missouri (38-11, 14-7) for a single game Friday at 6 p.m. and doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Friday's opening game will be rebroadcast locally by Comcast Sports Net on Friday evening (9 p.m.), Saturday (10 p.m.) and Sunday (midnight).
