Whittington Departing Oregon
Release Date: 06/26/2012
Whittington will depart the University of Oregon to join Melissa McFerrin’s staff at Memphis. The Tigers finished the 2011-12 season with a record of 25-8 and advanced to the second round of the WNIT.
"We're excited to add someone with coach Whittington's experience to our staff," McFerrin said in a Memphis press release. "She brings very high level recruiting and coaching experience, including Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight experience. She also brings our staff some extensive contacts on the East Coast and in the upper Midwest, both important recruiting areas for us."
Whittington spent three seasons at Oregon after joining the UO coaching staff on April 14, 2009. A native of Louisiana, Whittington served as the recruiting coordinator with the women’s basketball program, and also worked with the team’s post players.
“I am very grateful for the opportunity that Coach Westhead provided me when I joined the University of Oregon family," Whittington said. "I would like to thank Rob Mullens and the entire athletic department for their support of the women’s basketball program during my time at Oregon.”
Whittington helped bring in Westhead’s first UO recruiting class in the fall of 2009 which included Danielle Love, Ariel Thomas and Deanna Weaver. Oregon’s second class received a top-50 rating from ESPN Hoopgurlz as Jordan Loera, Janitah Iamaleava, Lexi Petersen, Megan Carpenter and Amanda Delgado joined the program.
During Whittington’s time at Oregon, the Ducks have a 46-49 record, and advanced to the third round of the WNIT in 2010.
During three years at Oregon, the Ducks have received seven all-conference honors, 10 all-academic conference accolades and most recently senior Amanda Johnson was selected by the Phoenix Mercury in the third round of the WNBA Draft.
At Memphis, Whittington will serve as the Tigers' post coach. The Tigers will play the 2012-13 season in Conference USA, then move to the BIG EAST Conference in the 2013-14 season.
