Daniel Winn: Ducks Flock to Many Sports
Monday, September 24, 2012
Hello Duck fans,
I'm writing from the cross country team's annual training camp in Sunriver, Oregon. First, let me begin with my complaints about the experience: sometimes it takes awhile to agree on what movie to watch, a fly just landed on my leg, and I haven't won every game of Hearts we've played.
Other than that, it has been a fantastic experience. It begins with our training, which is something to see. Every person has shown up at camp in fantastic shape; it's exciting watching the whole team crush workouts together. Everyone exudes a dedication to all stages of training: from runs to recovery, warm-ups, flexibility, stretching, and strength training.
The other significant aspect of camp is the cooking. Tim Costin is a culinary artist, even one-upping himself with each meal. His barbecue bacon burgers with cheese infused into the patty are too incredible for my vocabulary to properly describe. And I would be remiss if I failed to mention my blogging mentor Ben DeJarnette's truly wonderful chili.
The scenery is gorgeous, of course. One long run finished alongside the beautiful Deschutes River. There are a multitude of trails here. I haven't grown bored of any running routes.
More highlights include Chris Brewer's charades performances, numerous card tricks by Colby Alexander, and the clutch performance of the trip so far from Chad Noelle: remembering nail clippers. I was in the running for best clutch performance with my miniature golf game, until an embarrassing double bogey on the 8th hole.
Now I've got to go for a run with Trevor Dunbar, Parker Stinson, Ryan Pickering and perhaps others. Expect another blog shortly, introducing you to our newest Ducks.
