EUGENE – After the No. 3 University of Oregon volleyball team (16-1, 7-1) beat No. 5 Washington and Washington State in the same weekend for the third straight season, it improved two positions Monday in the eighth AVCA Coaches Poll of the season.
Last week, then-No. 5 UO swept WSU for its 13th straight series win, then topped the nation's last unbeaten team with its 3-1 win over then-No. 2 Washington.
It was the fourth straight year that the Ducks have edged the Huskies, and a third straight home series win for the first time since the start of Pac-12 play in 1986 (while those four outcomes also ended a 17-match UW series winning streak from 2001-08).
UO was one of five Pac-12 schools spotted in the top seven overall Monday with No. 2 Stanford, No. 5 Washington, No. 6 UCLA and No. 7 USC.
Among current league rankings, Stanford and UCLA climbed two and one positions; USC and Washington dropped one and three spots; and Oregon State again received votes.
One other Duck foe stood top 25 – No. 20 Ohio State – and California, Kentucky and St. Mary’s have picked up votes in current or previous editions.
For comparison’s sake, last week’s Pac-12 rankings follow: No. 2 Washington, No. 4 Stanford, No. 5 Oregon, No. 6 USC and No. 7 UCLA.
Overall during head coach Jim Moore’s eight-year tenure, Oregon has now been ranked top 25 for 83 editions (2012-9; 2011-14; ’10-13; ’09-16; ’08-16; ’07-13; ’06-2), including 47 in the top 15, and all 20 of the team’s ever top-10 honors. UO has also scored three, top-three rankings the past month with its No. 2 rankings in the fifth and sixth editions of the year.
Among other news among top five teams:
- No. 1 Penn State remained in the top spot for the fourth straight week after it won at home versus then-No. 17 Purdue (3-0) and Indiana (3-1).
- In its second week in the top five this year, No. 2 Stanford won at home vs. then-No. 6 USC (3-0) and vs. then-No. 7 UCLA (3-2).
- No. 4 Nebraska fell one spot although it won at home vs. Wisconsin (3-0) and then-No. 10 Minnesota (3-1).
The complete poll follows at the bottom of this article, and is also available at the AVCA website at the http://www.avca.org/divisions/division-one-women/polls/ URL address.
This weekend, UO begins its first of four straight road matches, and plays at Arizona (11-8, 3-5) and Arizona State (13-8, 2-6), Friday-Saturday, October 19-20. Next week, UO then plays at Colorado (13-7, 3-5) and Utah (11-10, 2-6), Fri.-Sun., Oct. 26-28.
Looking ahead to November, Oregon’s next home action will be vs. California and No. 2 Stanford, Fri.-Sun., Nov. 2-4 at 6 and 1 p.m., respectively.
Duck fans can tune in to watch five of its six next matches on Pac-12 Networks, with the Wildcat, Buffalo, Golden Bear and Cardinal tilts televised on the Pac-12 Oregon Network, and the Ute contest on the Pac-12 National Network.
