WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-12 Conference office announced today the Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Players of the Week for the week of Dec. 3-9. UCLA’s Alyssia Brewer was voted the Pac-12 Player of the Week, while Oregon’s Jillian Alleyne was selected the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the second time this season.
Freshman Jillian Alleyne (Fontana, Calif.) recorded her second double-double of the season in a 77-74 home loss to Nevada last Sunday. Alleyne scored 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. She also went 7-of-10 from the free throw line, while grabbing a game-high 18 rebounds to go with three assists, two blocks and a steal in a game-high 37 minutes. It was the sixth time in seven games this year that she tallied 10 or more rebounds and the third time she scored in double-figures. Alleyne has led the team in rebounding five times through UO’s first seven games.
A redshirt senior forward from Tulsa, Okla., Alyssia Brewer recorded her second consecutive double-double and third of the year with a team-high 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead No. 17/19 UCLA to a 62-42 blowout win over No. 12/16 Texas in Houston over the weekend. It is UCLA’s second win over a ranked opponent this season, as they also defeated No. 11 Oklahoma (86-83) on Nov. 14. She also registered two assists and two steals. The Bruins held the previously unbeaten Longhorns to a season-low 42 points with season-lows in each half (15 and 27). UCLA also forced Texas into committing a season-high 29 turnovers and held the Longhorns to a season-low 23.8 percent (15-for-63) shooting from the field.
It is Brewer’s first-career player of the week honor and UCLA’s 45th all-time, including two selections this season. Alleyne is tabbed the freshman of the week for the second time, with the first nod coming on Nov. 19 after she broke the Pac-12’s single-game rebounding record, grabbing 27 on Nov. 15.
The Bruins are headed to New York City to participate in a two-game tournament hosted by St. John’s on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 15 and 16. The Ducks have a pair of contests scheduled this week, beginning with a road trip to Illinois on Wednesday, Dec. 12, then host Fresno State on Sunday.
Also nominated for player of the week were Kama Griffitts of Arizona, Micaela Pickens of Arizona State, Brittany Wilson of Colorado, Ruth Hamblin of Oregon State, Taryn Wicijowski of Utah and Talia Walton of Washington. Also nominated for freshman of the week were Jamee Swan of Colorado, Ruth Hamblin of Oregon State and Talia Walton of Washington.
