TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 5 University of Oregon softball team (2-1) split its second-day action Friday in the Kajikawa Classic with an 8-1 victory over Stephen F. Austin (1-2) and 1-0 loss to Florida (2-0).

In the day’s finale, the Ducks out-hit the Gators, 5-4, but missed capitalizing on two early chances.

In the circle for UO, senior Jessica Moore (1-1) struck out five, walked four, and allowed three hits and no earned runs in her six-inning complete game.

At the plate, Oregon put two runners on in the second inning after freshman left fielder Koral Costa singled and junior catcher Alexa Peterson reached on an error by the third baseman. However, the hits were sandwiched around three strikeouts.

In the third inning, senior second baseman Kaylan Howard drilled her first double of the season with no outs, but was stranded after three infield ground-outs.

Among other Duck base-runners, junior shortstop Courtney Ceo and sophomore center fielder Janie Takeda added two-out singles in the third and fourth innings. In the seventh inning, Costa singled and Peterson reached on a two-out fielder’s choice.

At the plate, Costa led the Ducks in hits (2-for-3), and three others hit safely once – Ceo (1-for-3), Howard (1-for-3) and Takeda (1-for-2).

The Gators scored their lone run off the returning Duck All-American in the fourth inning. UF loaded the bases on a pair of walks and an infield error, and scored on an infield ground-out. Moore got the other outs on a fielder’s choice and strikeout.

The Gators also stranded two more runners in the fifth. After a one-out double and steal of third base, Moore answered with two strikeouts to end the threat.

Florida was led at the plate by Kelsey Stewart (2-for-3, 2B, 2 SB), and one other player hit safely – Stephanie Tofft (1-for-1, BB).

UF pitcher Hannah Rogers (1-0) struck out eight and walked none in the complete game.

Earlier in the afternoon in UO’s 8-1 victory over Stephen F. Austin, sophomore third baseman Jamie Rae Sullivan paced the Ducks with a 3-for-3 afternoon and career high in hits and 3 RBI.

Takeda also rapped multiple hits (2-for-2), and six other Ducks hit safely once.

In the circle for Oregon, sophomore Karissa Hovinga (1-0) won her first start of the campaign. The returning All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention choice struck out four, walked one, allowed five hits, and her one run allowed was earned.

Freshman Cheridan Hawkins pitched the final three innings to earn her first collegiate save. The prep All-American struck out eight of the nine batters she faced, walked two and, allowed no hits or runs.

Looking ahead, UO takes on No. 2 Oklahoma and San Jose State at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday, respectively, and Boise State at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday.
