CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The No. 9 University of Oregon softball team (10-3) opened action in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a 13-0, five-inning victory over Virginia (5-6) Friday night.

The Ducks registered their second straight series win in as many years, thanks to eight runs in the first inning, another in the second, and four more in the third.

En route to its fourth win of 2013 in less than seven innings, the UO offense struck for season highs in both runs (13) and hits (14).

Oregon claimed hits from all nine positions in the batting order, and three Ducks claimed multi-hit efforts - sophomore center field Janie Takeda (3-for-3, 3B, 2 RBI), freshman infielder Koral Costa (2-for-3, RBI) and freshman catcher Janelle Lindvall (2-for-3, 2 RBI).

Junior first baseman Kailee Cuico (1-for-2, HR, BB, 2 RBI) moved into a tie for the team season lead for homers (3), thanks to her two-run, first inning shot over the left center field wall. The returning All-Region honoree also raised her team-best RBI total to 15.

UO's other runs in the first came on an RBI triple by Takeda, followed by a passed ball, and RBI singles by Lindvall, senior right fielder Samantha Pappas and Takeda.

In the second inning, Lindvall knocked in another run after a pair of one-out walks to sophomore designated player Sara Goodrum and freshman infielder Danica Mercado.

In the third inning, junior shortstop Courtney Ceo, Takeda and senior second baseman Kaylan Howard opened with singles for UO's next run. Sophomore pinch-hitter Hannah Melick knocked in another RBI on an infield ground-out, and Goodrum, Mercado and Costa added RBI singles for the Ducks' final runs.

In the circle, UO staked its third shutout of the season behind the one-hit pitching of All-America senior Jessica Moore (5-2) and sophomore Karissa Hovinga.

In the three opening innings, Moore allowed one hit, struck out four, and walked none. Hovinga pitched the final two innings, struck out one, walked none and allowed no hits or runs.

Cavalier starter Emma Mitchell (0-1) faced the first eight batters, but got only one out. She gave up four hits, and six of her seven runs allowed were earned.

Aimee Chapdelaine pitched final 3.2 innings, struck out three, walked two, yielded 10 more hits, and five of her six runs allowed were earned.

UVA lead-off hitter Marcy Bowdren collected the opponents' lone hit on a two-out single to third base in the third inning.

Looking ahead to Saturday, UO faces Cal Poly at 3 p.m. and Nebraska at 5:30 p.m. On Sunday, Oregon caps play with single games vs. UNLV at 11:30 a.m. and San Diego State at 2 p.m.
