WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – After posting another impressive weekend in the circle, freshman pitcher Cheridan Hawkins was rewarded with Pac-12 Softball Pitcher of the Week honors Tuesday.
Helping lead the No. 8 University of Oregon softball team (19-3) to a 6-0 run in the Citrus Classic, she logged UO’s second-highest strikeout tally ever (15) in her six-inning, 8-0 shutout of Boston College.
That tally was one shy of the school record, and her only hit allowed came with one out remaining (while she only walked one, too).
In the tourney finale - a 12-1 win over James Madison - the Anderson, Calif., native struck out six, walked one and allowed only two hits vs. the Dukes who picked up votes in last week's national poll.
In the 8-1 victory over returning NCAA tourney advancer Long Island, she struck out all six batters she faced in her two innings of relief.
Against Super Regional returnee and No. 14 Michigan, she added two strikeouts in her two innings, and allowed no hits or runs.
For the third straight weekend she kept her tourney ERA below 0.50 after she logged 0.00 ERA’s the previous two weekends. She allowed only one earned run on the trip, which ended a 39.0 streak of innings the past three weeks without allowing an earned run. Among the team’s six games combined in Orlando, she led in ERA (0.45), wins (2), innings (15.2), strikeouts (29) and opposing batting average (.078).
Now with a month of action under belt, this week she led the Pac-12 in opposing batting average (.082), saves (3), games in relief (8) and games finished (8), and stood top 10 in ERA (third, 1.15), appearances (fifth, 14) and strikeouts (sixth, 76).
Monday’s award marks the 38th pitcher/player honor in school history, and ninth overall in the tenure of head coach Mike White (and the fourth for a Duck pitcher).
Among the current roster, senior outfielder Samantha Pappas and pitcher Jessica Moore are two-time recipients, and junior catcher Alexa Peterson and senior outfielder Allie Burger received similar nods in 2011 and ’10, respectively.
Also honored Monday with Player of the Week honors was Arizona State junior Alix Johnson. The center fielder hit .750 (1.500 slugging, 12 runs, 9 hits, 3 homers) in games vs. East Carolina, North Dakota and No. 22 Baylor.
Team-wise in Orlando last weekend, Oregon staked its second straight perfect tourney mark (and sixth overall under fourth-year head coach Mike White).
UO’s six wins included convincing victories over No. 11 LSU (10-2 (5 innings)) and No. 14 Michigan (13-4 (6)) and NCAA tournament returnee Long Island (8-1). Oregon also beat Boston College (8-0 (6), Temple (11-4) and James Madison (12-1) – and the latter received votes in last week’s poll.
This week, the Ducks look ahead to four games in the Fresno State Classic, March 8-9.
UO first faces San Diego State and Fresno State on Friday at 1:30 and 6 p.m., and Iowa State and St. Mary's on Saturday at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Next week, Oregon opens its home slate with a doubleheader vs. New Mexico on Wednesday, March 13 at 2 p.m.
Like all Duck softball doubleheaders in ’13, fans that pay for one game, get into the second game for free. Various St. Patrick’s Day promotions will also be staged, and 50 promotional coffee mugs will also be distributed to fans.
