OKLAHOMA CITY – Confirming their places among the nation’s top freshmen, the University of Oregon’s Cheridan Hawkins and Danica Mercado were among 17 players selected for the ASA/USA Softball Junior Women’s National Team (JWNT) Friday.

This week, the Anderson, Calif., native Hawkins led the NCAA in fewest hits per seven innings (2.07 average), and also stood top 30 nationally in strikeouts per seven innings (fifth, 11.3 avg.), saves (ninth, 3) and ERA (15th, 1.14).
The two-time Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week has fanned +10 batters on three occasions, including 15 in six innings vs. Boston College (and one shy of the school record).

The Temecula, Calif., native Mercado has made 17 starts for the Ducks in left and right field, third base and designated player, and has 11 hits, 4 RBI, 3 walks and 3 stolen bases.
She is one of 11 Ducks with game-winning RBI this year, thanks to her second-inning single last month in a 4-0 win over Louisiana-Monroe in Las Vegas.

Women’s College World Series returnee Oregon is one of four teams to have two players on the squad with Alabama, Michigan and UCLA.

Other college teams with single players included Arizona, Florida, James Madison, Missouri, South Florida, Stanford, Tennessee and Texas.

The American JWNT squad looks ahead this summer to the International Softball Federation X Jr. Women's World Championship.

The event for 19-and-under players will be held July 1-7 in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, and more information is available at the web site.

The week before, the squad will play exhibition games in Glenville, W.V., in conjunction with a youth clinic, and more info is available at the web site.

The squad was chosen from a 40-person player pool determined by the USA Softball Women’s National Team Selection Committee.

Tairia Flowers will serve as the team’s head coach, and her staff is rounded out by assistant coaches Lisa Dodd (a former Duck assistant coach), Laura Berg and Trisha Ford.

More information on ASA / USA Softball is available at the web site.

Hawkins (#11) and Mercado (#27) were both ESPN top-100 recruits last year with two other Oregon freshmen - catcher Janelle Lindvall (#9, Stevenson Ranch, Calif.), and utility player Koral Costa (#63, San Pedro, Calif.).

Closer to home this weekend, Pac-12 leading and No. 10 Oregon (27-4, 4-0) has single games at No. 15 Washington (24-9, 2-2) on Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at noon.

Friday’s game will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 TV Network, and Saturday’s finale will be video-streamed online at the link.

The Ducks opened the series with a 12-1 victory over the returning Super Regional advancer Huskies Thursday afternoon in Seattle. Mercado (1-for-1) was one 11 Ducks that hit safely in the game and tied a team season high in hits (17).
