TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 11 Oregon battled back from a big deficit for the second straight night, but the result was the same as No. 24 Arizona State held off the Ducks 14-9 to clinch the series on Saturday night.
The Ducks trailed 10-4 heading into the eighth inning but rallied with five runs to cut the lead to 10-9. Arizona State (19-8-1, 6-5 Pac-12) answered with four runs of its own in the eighth to clinch the win.
Oregon (22-8, 8-3 Pac-12) matched Arizona State with 14 hits, but the Sun Devils had nine extra base hits including seven doubles and two triples. Oregon finished with four doubles.
J.J. Altobelli led Oregon going 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Mitchell Tolman was 3-for-5 with a run scored. Ryon Healy finished 2-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored. Tyler Baumgartner went 2-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored. Aaron Payne had just one official bat (0-for-1) but scored two runs.
Dalton Dinatale led Arizona State with three RBI, while three Sun Devils – Michael Benjamin, James McDonald and R.J. Ybarra – each had two RBI.
ASU scored in six of the eight innings it batted and scored multiple runs in five of those. Oregon trailed 7-1 after five innings, but rallied to score two runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and five in the eighth.
Starter Tommy Thorpe (4-3) took the loss giving up six runs, five earned, in 4.2 innings. Ryan Kellogg (7-0) picked up the win allowing seven runs, six earned, in 7.1 innings.
Oregon and Arizona State wrap up the three-game series Sunday at 12:30 p.m. Cole Irvin will take the mound for the Ducks.
