OKLAHOMA CITY – University of Oregon senior Jessica Moore received another top national honor Wednesday as a member of the USA Softball Player of the Year Top-10 Finalist List.
The Sutter, Calif., native was one of five senior pitchers selected for the nation’s most prestigious honor with Oklahoma seniors Keilani Ricketts and Michelle Gascoigne, California’s Jolene Henderson and Texas’ Blaire Luna.
Five other position players were also chosen - Oklahoma sophomore first baseman Lauren Chamberlain, the Tennessee senior duo of third baseman Raven Chavanne and second baseman Lauren Gibson, Notre Dame sophomore outfielder Emilee Koerner and Michigan freshman shortstop Sierra Romero.
Later this month, the award’s three finalists will be announced on May 22, and the winner will be unveiled on May 28 prior to the start of the 2013 NCAA Women's College World Series (WCWS) in Oklahoma City.
Previous award recipients include UCLA catcher Stacey Nuveman (2002), Texas pitcher Cat Osterman (2003, 2005 and 2006), Florida State pitcher Jessica Van der Linden (2004), Tennessee pitcher Monica Abbott (2007), Virginia Tech pitcher Angela Tincher (2008), Washington pitcher Danielle Lawrie (2009 and 2010), Stanford shortstop Ashley Hansen (2011) and Oklahoma pitcher Keilani Ricketts (2012).
This week, Moore ranked top 25 nationally in wins (20th, 24) and ERA (24th, 1.53) and stood second in the Pac-12 in each.
She has staked eight wins over top-20 teams this year vs. #4 California (twice), #11 LSU, #14 Michigan, #15 Washington, #16 UCLA and #17 Arizona (twice). Among her 14 victories against NCAA tournament returnees, other decisions came vs. Long Beach State, Portland State, San Diego State (twice) and Oregon State (twice).
All-time for UO, the returning All-American is the school career record holder for wins (97), strikeouts (875), innings (862) and appearances (168), and top-10 in shutouts (fourth, 18) and complete games (sixth, 74).
On Duck all-time season charts, she also stood fourth in wins (24) this season and matched her sophomore mark.
Earlier this week, she was tabbed the USA Softball National Player of the Week and Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week after she posted a 3-0 mark at home last week vs. Oregon State and Seattle. Helping the Ducks (45-7, 18-3) stake their first-ever conference title, she posted nine strikeouts in starts vs. both the Redhawks and Beavers – one shy of her season high.
Last month, she was similarly honored with NFCA National Player of the Week laurels after she beat then-No. 17 Arizona twice (including a perfect game in the finale). Also in April, the sixth pick overall in the NPF professional draft won another of her four school-record Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week laurels career-wise.
This week, No. 2 Oregon (45-7, 18-3) caps the regular season with three games at No. 5 Arizona State (43-9, 14-7), Thursday-Saturday, May 9-11. The final two games will be televised live by the Pac-12 Network at 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
The next day on Sunday, May 12, the 64-team NCAA Tournament selection show will be aired by ESPNU at 7 p.m. Pacific Time.
