BRAMPTON, Ont. - The University of Oregon softball team's freshman duo of Cheridan Hawkins and Danica Mercado helped the USA Softball Junior National Team stay perfect in ISF Junior World Championship third-day action Wednesday.

The Americans scored afternoon wins over Puerto Rico (15-0) and Canada (4-0) to raise their overall record to 5-0 in the tournament for the world's top players age 19 and under.

In Team USA's first game of the day, the Americans collected 13 hits and 15 runs en route to its three-inning shutout of Puerto Rico who fell to 4-3 in the event.

Three U.S. players staked multi-hit games - Erin Shireman (3-for-3, HR, 2 RBI), Kelsey Stewart (3-for-3, 3B, 2 RBI) and Mysha Sataraka (2-for-3, HR, 3 RBI) - and Lauren Young also homered in her 1-for-3 game.

Pitcher Trisha Ford (1-0) allowed only one hit in her three innings, struck out five, and walked none in the complete game.

Later in the evening vs. Canada, the Ducks' Hawkins added a complete game shutout in the 4-0 decision over the Canadians who dropped to 5-1 overall in the tourney.

In Team USA's first seven-inning regulation game this week, the Anderson, Calif., native struck out eight, and allowed only one hit and no walks.

“Our defense did an outstanding job today,” Hawkins said. “They really had my back and they gave me a lot of confidence to throw better.  Once our hitters made the adjustments we needed to make we started to produce and they did a great job.”

Freshman second baseman Danica Mercado also started the game and hit safely for the third straight contest.

In her 1-for-2 outing, the Temecula, Calif., native singled in the third inning and later scored on a double by Haylie McCleney.

Five other Americans also hit safely once, and the other extra-base hit was a triple by Kelsey Stewart.

In the circle for Canada, Sara Groenenwegen struck out five, walked none, and yielded six hits in her complete game.

So far after three days in Ontario, Hawkins (2-0) leads the team in wins, strikeouts (17) and ERA (0.00).

Mercado has been equally impressive at the plate, and in her three games is hitting .500 (3-for-6, 2B, 3B, RBI).

Looking ahead to Thursday, Team USA plays Korea and New Zealand at 6:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Pacific Time to wrap up pool play.

Playoff action will follow on Friday and Saturday, and Sunday's action will feature the bronze medal, consolation final and gold medal games starting at 8:00 a.m.
