East Lansing, Mich. – The No. 12 Oregon volleyball (3-2) team fell in four sets (25-21, 25-22, 21-25, 25-21) to No. 20 Michigan State (4-1) in the Ducks’ first top-25 matchup of the season.

Ariana Williams led the way for the Ducks with a career-high 16 kills while hitting .625 on 24 total attempts but it was not enough to defeat a Michigan State team that hit .285 on the night, 61 points better than its season average .224.

MSU’s Lauren Wicinski led all players with 17 kills and 19 points.

The first set was a duel of runs beginning with Michigan State which scored six-consecutive points to expand their lead from 8-7 to 14-7. The Ducks clawed their way back to within a point at 16-15 after a 6-0 run of their own and drew the set even at 20-20. The Spartans righted their wrongs quickly, though, and took charge to a 25-21 first-set win.

The second set was much tighter, as neither team led by more than three points. The Spartans were big at the net, out-blocking the Ducks 4-0, three of which came during MSU’s final six points of the set.

Oregon sprung back into action in the third set with a 25-21 victory. The Ducks took a 2-1 lead early in the set and never relinquishing it throughout the remainder of the frame.

The fourth and final set was a back-and-forth affair which finally broke open after a 4-0 run by Michigan State made the score 19-14. Oregon tried to make charges back but were held off in the

Outside hitters Martenne Bettendorf and Liz Brenner also broke the double-digit barrier for kills, with 14 and 11, respectively while freshman libero Amanda Benson contributed her second-consecutive 20-plus dig performance.

The match was Oregon’s first to go more than three sets.

Oregon will complete its road trip with a match at No. 7 Michigan, Saturday at 11 a.m. PT. The Wolverines defeated Oregon State in four sets, Friday. Live stats for the Oregon-Michigan match can be found HERE.
