EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Oregon women’s golf team placed fifth at the season-opening Mary Fossum Invitational after shooting a 306 (+18) in Sunday’s final round. The Ducks finished with a three-round total of 908 (+44), just two strokes behind the third place finishers, at the Forest Akers West Golf Course.
Michigan State, the tournament host, claimed the team and individual titles. The Spartans won the tournament with an 892 (+28), while Liz Nagel shot a 217 (+1) to win medalist honors.
Head coach Ria Scott and the Ducks were led by two top-10 finishers. Sophomore Caroline Inglis shot a one-under par final round to place fifth, and junior Cassy Isagawa tied for seventh. The Ducks opened the tournament with rounds of 303 (+15) and 299 (+11) before carding a 306 in today’s finale. Sunday’s average score was nearly two strokes more than Saturday’s average.
Inglis was one of two players in the field to break par today, earning her first career top-five tournament finish with a 54-hole total of 221 (+5). The sophomore from Eugene shot a one-under 71 today after shooting consecutive rounds of 75 (+3) on Saturday. She fell to two-over par six holes into her round, but closed with four birdies, seven pars and just one bogey to get below par.
Isagawa shot a two-over 74 to tie for seventh with a three-round total of 223 (+7). The two-time All-Pac-12 selection was brilliant on the back nine, carding three birdies and six pars to shoot a 33. She closed the round with three straight bogeys. Isagawa shot a 73 (+1) and 76 (+4) on Saturday.
Freshman Cathleen Santoso carded a top-20 finish in her first career tournament, shooting a 54-hole total of 228 (+12) to tie for 17th. Santoso made 12 pars in today’s final round to card a 79 (+7). She carded one of Oregon’s two below par rounds of the tournament, a one-under 71 on Saturday.
Junior Monica Petchakan tied for 46th with a three-round tally of 236 (+20). She carded an 82 (+10) in today’s final round, making nine pars and a birdie on her opening hole, the par-five fifth. Petchakan opened the tournament with consecutive rounds of 77 (+5).
Senior Raphaela Dyer tied for 63rd with a 54-hole score of 242 (+26). Dyer carded in 84 in Sunday’s final round.
Junior Cali Hipp and freshman Brenna Murphy competed individually for Oregon. Hipp tied for 21st in the field with a 229 (+13). She led the field in par-five scoring, finishing the tournament two-under on par-fives. She carded a 79 (+7) in today’s final round. Brenna Murphy placed 88th with a 257 (+41).
Oregon returns to action Sept. 20-21 with the Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. The tournament is held at the UNM Championship Course, and tee times are to be determined.
