DAVIS, Calif. -- The University of Oregon men’s tennis team opened the fall season at the Aggie Invitational today in Davis, Calif., with a superb performance in singles. The Ducks went a combined 10-3 in singles play, with two student-athletes advancing to the quarterfinals in the ITA Aggie Singles bracket and one player advancing to the quarterfinals of the ITA Big West Singles bracket
The Ducks went 3-0 in the opening round of the main singles bracket with senior Robin Cambier, sophomore Kevin Farin and junior Joey Swaysland advancing to the round of 16. Cambier, the top-seeded player in the field, defeated Tom Miller (6-4, 6-2) and Wyatt Houghton (6-1, 6-3) to advance to the quarterfinals with two-straight set wins.
Farin, competing as a Duck for his first time, won both his matches in three sets to reach the quarterfinals. He defeated Thomas Takemoto (6-3, 2-6, 6-4) in the opening round before knocking off Nikhil Jayashankr (6-0, 3-6, 6-4) reach the quarterfinals.
Swaysland had a dominating season-opening match, only dropping three games to Nikolas Papic in a 6-2, 6-1 victory. He dropped a three set match in the second round to Mads Engsted (6-4, 1-6, 4-6), falling to the consolation bracket.
Cambier and Farin drew the No. 2 seed in the main doubles bracket and won their lone match of the day, defeating Sean Kolar and Tom Miller 8-6.
Freshman Jayson Amos advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Big West Singles bracket. Amos defeated Adam Luba 6-2, 6-2 in round one and won by injury default in the second round. Sophomore Brent Chin also won his opening match defeating Johan Samuelsson 6-1, 6-3. Chin fell to Alec Adamson 6-3, 6-3 in the second round. Freshman Alex Marcinkowski dropped his opening match but advanced in the consolation bracket with a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 victory over.
Action will resume from UC Davis on Saturday at 9 a.m. (PT), opening with doubles play before singles action.
