EUGENE, Ore. -- Two weeks removed from a brilliant season-opening tournament, the University of Oregon men’s tennis team aspires to similar results at a competitive Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional this week.  Oregon will be in action at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championship, hosted by St. Mary’s College, from Oct-18-22.

Head coach Nils Schyllander’s squad opened the season with a combined 21-10 record at the UC Davis Aggie Invitational, winning both the main singles and doubles brackets. There’s plenty more work on the table for the Ducks now, competing at an ITA regional that will draw elite talent from the west coast.

Action will be held at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex in Moraga, Calif.

“We want to have a lot of success at regionals,” said associate head coach Jonas Piibor. “We haven’t had many good tournaments there in the past. I want to see if we have guys that can make the finals. In our goal meetings with the guys, a lot of them said there goal was to make finals. This will be a good test for them.”

The ITA regionals serve as a precursor to the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, with bracket winners in regionals advancing to nationals.

With a talented lineup featuring an even mix of savvy veterans and promising newcomers, the Ducks are setting the bar high for this week’s competition, as well as the season. Senior Robin Cambier, juniors Michael Schaeffer and Daniel Sardu, sophomores Sam Bush, Kevin Farin and Brent Chin, and freshmen Alex Marcincowski and Jayson Amos will be in action this week.

“We’re going down there with high expectations,” said Schyllander. “We have good athletes that want to win and advance. That won’t come easy – there is some serious talent down there.”

Oregon likely won’t be flying under the radar at regionals after its statement performance to open the season. Top-seeded Robin Cambier went 5-0 in singles and claimed the Flight A bracket with a dominating performance. The Ducks also claimed the doubles title as Cambier and Kevin Farin went 4-0 as the No. 2 seed to best the field.

The Ducks went a combined 14-6 in singles action and 7-4 in doubles play. Despite the great marks, the Ducks kept their noses down and were eager to get back to work.

“I want to make progress every single day,” said Piibor. “I know every coach says that, but we really need it. I want our guys to be focused and to make each practice the best one of the season. We can’t be satisfied by having on okay practice.”

In last year’s regional, the Ducks furthest advancing players came in doubles. Cambier and former Duck Jeff Mullen advanced all the way to the quarterfinals before falling 8-4 to a team from Saint Mary’s.

Draws for the 2013 USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championship are yet to be released. Recaps following each day of action will be posted to

Following regionals, the Ducks continue their fall season with the Easley Memorial Classic from Nov. 1-3 in Las Vegas, Nev.
