LAS VEGAS -- Sophomore Kevin Farin advanced to the main draw finals in both singles and doubles and the University of Oregon men’s tennis team continued to impress Saturday at the Easley Memorial Classic. Head coach Nils Schyllander’s Ducks will be represented in both of Sunday’s finals matches. Action is being held at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the campus of UNLV.
Farin won a semifinal singles match against another ranked foe and picked up two doubles victories with senior Robin Cambier in doubles. Tomorrow’s finals matches will begin at 9 a.m. (PT) with doubles, followed by singles. Oregon is searching for its third and fourth flight titles of the fall campaign and its first since the UC Davis Aggie Invitational.
“Kevin played at a very high level again today,” said Schyllander. “Back-to-back wins against ranked opponents and reaching the finals speaks volumes to where he is at with his game. He was on a mission today. To come back after suffering from cramps in a three-hour match yesterday and play as well as he did is an impressive feat.”
After winning 9-of-10 matches Friday, the Ducks added three more wins courtesy of Farin’s impressive play.
The Brussels, Belgium, native met No. 75 Lukas Ollert in the Flight A singles bracket with a ticket to the finals on the line. Farin won handily in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, in a second straight win over a ranked foe. He improved his record to 7-2 this fall. Farin defeated No. 76 Ace Matias of UNLV in the quarterfinals Friday. Farin will meet Auburn’s Dan Cochrane in the finals Sunday as the sophomore looks for his first singles title as a Duck.
Farin and Cambier advanced to the finals of the main draw doubles bracket after two impressive displays. The duo defeated UNLV’s Tamas Batyi and Willie Sublette 8-3 in the quarterfinals. Next, they defeated Auburn’s Cochrane and Dante Saleh 8-3 to secure a spot in the finals.
Farin and Cambier are in pursuit of their second doubles flight title of the season. They will meet Auburn’s Dennis Lengsfeld and Ollert in the finals. Cambier and Farin have a team-high eight doubles victories this fall.
“From the first point on, Kevin and Robin played with energy and carried it throughout the entire match,” said Schyllander. “They were all-around solid today and played a great match to move on to the finals.”
Cambier also competed in the semifinals of the main singles bracket and claimed the first set against Cochrane 6-2. Cochrane rallied to a three-set win, claiming the final two sets 6-1, 6-2.
Junior Joey Swaysland met Sublette in the semifinals of the Flight B singles bracket. Swaysland came up short 7-6 (5), 6-3, and finished with a 2-1 singles record on the tournament.
The Ducks have won 12-of-15 matches through two days of action at the Easley Memorial Classic.
