FRESNO, Calif. – The Oregon women’s tennis team flourished on day two of the Bulldog Classic winning 7-of-10 matches Saturday evening in Fresno, Calif. Like her twin sister yesterday, Allie Hueffner recorded her first win as Duck Saturday afternoon defeating Galina Bykova of Idaho 6-2, 6-4 in the third round of Flight C&D.
"Our results were definitely better today and we are moving in the right direction for where we want to be come January," said head coach Paul Reber. "For a lot of us it was just getting out there and competing again after a long break without any tournament matches. I am confident we can continue to develop and grow as a team from our experience today."
Jasmine Minor went 2-0 on the day in singles action downing Vicky Lozano of Idaho 6-3, 6-3 and won by default in her next match against Jennifer Cornea of Cal Poly due to injury in Flight A&B.
In the other Flight C&D match, freshman Lina Åkesson fell to Megan Govi of Portland State 6-2, 6-2.
Lena Macomson and Kadie Hueffner both won their matches in the Flight F consolation quarterfinals adding to UO’s success on day two of the tournament. Macomson was challenged in the second set of her match against Anna Klavins of Cal Poly but edged her way past Klavins 6-1, 7-6 (11).
K. Hueffner notched her second victory as a Duck in as many days downing Tanya Murtagh of Fresno State in a hard fought match, 7-5, 7-6 (2).
In Flight A of doubles action, the duo of Long/Minor advanced to the semis after an 8-5 win over Bermudez/Bykova of Idaho. The pair however bowed out in their semifinal match against Fresno State’s duo of Ahmed/Watts, 8-6.
The Hueffners notched their first doubles victory together Saturday defeating Fresno Pacific’s pair of Lee/Sobiecka 8-1. The twins had a hard-fought first match of the day and nearly beat Preda/Vorster of Portland State but eventually fell 8-6.
The pair of Macomson and Maya Mammetgulyeva of Fresno Community College lost both of their doubles matches today falling to Barcenilla/Flores of Idaho 8-2 and Lozano/McDonald of Idaho and Portland State 8-5 in rounds two and three of Flight B.
"The day ended with a great win from Lena to end our day on a really positive note," Reber said. "We are looking forward to competing one more day before our Fall season comes to an end."
Oregon concludes play at the Bulldog Classic, Sunday, beginning at 9 a.m. with doubles action before moving on to singles play.
