FRESNO, Calif. – Oregon recorded a pair of victories in Flights C&D from Allie Hueffner and Lina Åkesson on the final day of the Bulldog Classic in Fresno, Calif., Sunday afternoon. The Ducks as a team wrapped up the tournament going 10-15 in singles play and 3-3 in doubles action.
"It was good for us to get out and play this weekend," said head coach Paul Reber. "With the shortened fall season this year, it was tough on the girls not having as many tournament matches under their belts as we have had in past years, but I think we did a good job of working on the things we have been talking the past month."
"Our freshmen learned a lot from being here and that will definitely help us out down the road once the dual match season commences," Reber said.
Minor, a transfer from Georgia Tech, fell 6-3, 7-5 to Almundena Sanz of Idaho in her lone match of the day to conclude the tournament in Flight A&B. Nicole Long bowed out of her match before it could begin due an injury incurred on the second day of play.
The Ducks found success from their pair of freshmen in Flight C&D. After dropping her first set 5-7, A. Hueffner rallied to win back-to-back sets to complete the 5-7, 6-3, 10-7 victory over Marina Todd of Portland State and finish 2-2 at the tournament. Åkesson didn’t play her first match of the day due to Rita Bermudez of Idaho defaulting due to injury but won a hard fought match against a familiar opponent in Bryn Bacharach of Cal Poly 6-3, 1-6, 10-5.
"For Allie to pull out her come from behind win was a good effort on her part," said Reber. "Lina, playing without her two handed backhand due to a left wrist injury, did a great job of competing hard, coming up with a third set win on the final day for herself."
Lena Macomson and Kadie Hueffner wasn’t able to take down Idaho’s Belen Barcenilla as the lone Vandal took down both ducks in straight sets by a score of 6-2, 6-2 in Flights E and F. Macomson battled with Chanel Scudiero of Cal Poly in her final match forcing a third set but eventually fell 6-7, 6-1, 10-5.
The duo of Macomson and Maya Mammetgulyyeva of Fresno Community College bowed out of their final Flight B doubles match due to injury to conclude their run at the classic.
With the completion of their fall season, the Ducks will now prepare for the University of Indiana Invitational (Jan. 18-20) that will serve as a primer to their season opener, Jan. 24, against South Carolina Upstate at home.Bulldog Classic (Day 3)
