Oregon Head Coach Dana Altman
Opening statement…
“After six days off, I thought we’d be sharper. I thought their defense was playing us really soft. They just got us standing around. The ball movement was not good on the offensive end. I thought we started the game pretty well defensively and had the lead. Then we gave them three layouts and a wide open three, which got their head back in the game. Offensively, I didn’t like our ball movement. Defensively, at times we played really well and Jason in the second half made four or five defensive plays that were outstanding and really showed some toughness and he did a good job. There were some bright spots, but we’re not taking care of the fundamentals and what we want to do. We’re not running the floor consistently. We don’t have five guys pushing it out.”

On the game…
“I thought we got transition in both those segments. I think we’ll really have to think about our combination of guys. We got to get in some production inside with our guys running the floor and getting some easy one on the boards. We got to get consistency in practice. We’re practicing hard, but our focus and attention to detail is apparently not what it should.”

“We beat them on the boards like we should of. Sometimes our effort defensively was really good.

“We took some chances. I thought we were a step slow all night. Kind of got standing up on defense just like we did on offense.”

On Jason Calliste
“He was kind of a glue guy there tonight. He really settled us down in that second half. Those four or five possessions where he just dictated and made sure everyone was in the right spot and made switches. He just fronted the post. I just thought he took over and did some really good things there.”

OREGON PLAYER QUOTES

#12, Guard, Jason Calliste
On his overall thoughts of tonight’s performance...
“I think we need to get better. We didn’t really play that well. Too many guys are worrying about the wrong things. We’re not going to outscore every team we play. We have to lock up, we have to play defense, and we just have to get better.”

On what he thought his teammates were worried about…
“Just in general, we are not sitting down on defense like we should. We’re an athletic group, so I feel like if we can rebound and defend, we’re going to win a lot of games.”

On if he was happy with the team’s defensive effort…
“I’m not. Coach is not happy, the guys are not happy; it’s just not good enough. If you want to be good that’s not good enough.”

On what the team needs to change defensively…
“We need to keep the focus on defense. Our main focal point should be defense. We are going to stop guys and that’s how we are going to get baskets. That’s how we are going to score. That’s when we can start running and that’s when we can play our game.”

VISITING HEAD COACH QUOTES

Utah Valley Head Coach Dick Hunsaker
On Oregon’s two runs in the first and second half…
“I thought we got off to a solid start in executing our game plan, but they got us a little catty wampus at times. Give them credit for scattering us. Their pressure is terrific. They went on a nice little run in the first half and in the second half. They clamped down on us defensively. We didn’t get the looks that we need to get. They got aggressive on offense and we weren’t able to sustain enough to stay with them.”

On back-to-back games against top 25 opponents…
“You have to know who you are playing and be realistic. Those were two good teams. The Ducks are explosive offensively. They’re really trying to mesh a lot of new guys in, so give them credit for such a good start they’ve been off to this season. They’re complimentative to each other and play selfless. We hope we can pull what we can from these games and improve as the season progresses.”
