HONOLULU – The No. 2 ranked Oregon softball team saw its eight-game winning streak end in the title game of the Pepsi Rainbow Wahine Classic after a, 3-0, loss to James Madison on Saturday afternoon.

The Ducks went 5-1 at the tournament, which was hosted by the University of Hawai’i, sweeping through the four games of round robin play plus the semifinal before falling in title game on Saturday.

The Ducks (23-3) scored no runs on five hits with two errors while the Dukes (19-9) tallied three runs on nine hits with four errors. Oregon was shutout for the first time this season.

When the two teams met earlier in the tournament, Cheridan Hawkins and JMU starter Jailyn Ford battled in pitchers’ duel, with UO winning, 1-0.

In the title game, the Ducks started Karissa Hovinga in the circle, but after James Madison scored and put a runner on third in the fourth inning, head coach Mike White brought in Jasmine Smithson-Willett for relief. The runner from third came across, putting James Madison up, 2-0, in the fourth, but no more damage was done.

Oregon had a chance to get a run or two back in the bottom of the fourth, with the bases loaded and one out, but a strikeout and fly out ended the threat.

The Ducks had at least one runner in scoring position in the third, fourth and fifth innings but could break through against Ford, who threw another gem for the Dukes.

Ford - Hawkins’ USA Junior National Team teammate over the summer – allowed no runs on five hits with no walks and two strikeouts. She threw 72 of her 94 pitches for strikes and improved to 9-5 on the season.

Hovinga (8-1) took the loss, her first of the season, after giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits in three innings with no walks and three strikeouts. Smithson-Willett allowed one run (unearned) on two hits in 1.1 innings while Cheridan Hawkins tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless, two-hit, relief.
