Ducks Fall on the Road to ASU, 4-0

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Oregon women’s tennis team had its hands full when the Ducks visited 25th-ranked Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz., Friday afternoon at the Whitman Tennis Center. The Sun Devils swept the Ducks, 4-0, and handed UO a loss to open the first leg of its nine-day six-match road swing.

Lana Buttner and Sofia Hager had their seven-match win streak snapped, when playing in the No. 3 doubles position, at the hands of Joanna Smith and Stephanie Vlad, 8-3. ASU clinched the doubles point after Leighann Sahagun and Alexandra Osborne defeated Marlou Kluiving and Lina Åkesson, 8-3.

Åkesson was the first to fall in singles play, dropping her fifth-straight match to ASU’s Ebony Panaho 6-4, 6-0 at singles No. 5. Buttner was the next Duck to fall, after Sahagun defeated the senior – 6-1, 6-3 – at No. 3 singles. Arizona State clinched the match after Gussie O’Sullivan took down Kadie Hueffner in straight-sets at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-2..

With the Sun Devils clinching the match 4-0, all remaining matches were suspended and left unfinished. At the top singles slot, Long was trailing Vlad, who is ranked 50th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, 6-4, 4-5. Minor also trailed 96th-ranked singles player Desirae Krawczyk 6-4, 5-2 once the team score was decided.

Allie Hueffner was the only Duck to be ahead of her opponent – Kassidy Jump – when the match had been determined, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0.
