SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – No. 11 Oregon scored five runs on just one hit in the first inning and then cruised to a 12-5 non-conference win over San Francisco at Benedetti Diamond on Wednesday.
The Ducks turned five walks, a hit by pitch and a single into a 5-0 lead against the Dons. USF starter Jordan Haseltine walked the first three hitters and then hit Mitchell Tolman to give Oregon (18-6) a 1-0 lead. After a strikeout, freshman A.J. Balta drove in two runs with a single to left field to put UO on top 3-0.
Freshman Jack Kruger made it 4-0 with a bases loaded walk before Balta scored on a wild pitch.
USF (12-11) responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a Derek Atkinson two-RBI single to pull within three runs, but Ducks’ starter Brando Tessar limited the Dons to just one more run in his five innings and left with UO leading 8-3.
Oregon scored single runs in the fourth and fifth before Tessar, who picked up his first win of the season, left the game. Aaron Payne hit his second career home run, a solo shot to right to lead off the fourth, and J.B. Bryant single and scored Kruger.
The Ducks added two more runs in the top of the seventh on a RBI single by Mark Karaviotis and a sacrifice fly by Bryant. Oregon tacked on two more runs in the top of the ninth on a RBI double by pinch hitter Steven Packard and a RBI single by Bryant.
Bryant led Oregon going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Catalano finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Payne was 2-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored.
Oregon is back in action on Friday when they start a three-game Pac-12 Conference series at Stanford.
