STANFORD, Calif.– Having taken third in its own tournament just three days ago, the Oregon men’s golf team made the necessary adjustments on Friday at The Goodwin. The Ducks, who were just 1-under par after playing the front nine, attacked the back-nine and sank a dozen birdies as a team to wrap up the first day in third place.
“The guys played well today,” head coach Casey Martin said. “We have been a bit hot and cold this year, but today was solid. We played the final nine really well which was encouraging.”
Oregon wrapped up the day carding a 273 7-under to trail St. Mary’s, who is in second place, by just two strokes, 271, 9-under.
The Cardinal lead the pack with an impressive 269, 12-under card, playing on their home course the University of Stanford Golf Course. Stanford’s Patrick Rodgers, who is the No. 3-ranked individual player by Golfstat, leads the individual board with a 7-under card (63), while San Diego State’s Ricky DeSantis is in second at 5-under.
Brandon McIver is in a tie for third thanks to his three birdies on the back nine for a 66, 4-under card. McIver opened up the tournament with an eagle on the part-5, 521 yard first-hole.
After shooting a double-bogey on the 10th-hole to bring him back to even par, Sulman Raza was able sink back-to-back birdies on the 16th and 17th-hole to finish 2-under. His 2-under card is second best on the team and ties the sophomore for 11th overall.
Zach Foushee was 3-under heading into the final two holes of the day, but back-to-back bogeys on the 17th and 18th-hole pushed him back to just a score of 69, 1-under on the day.
Thomas Lim started off with a birdie on the first hole before going firing in a bogey, bogey and double-bogey on the front nine. The freshman however was able to reel off three birdies on the back nine to finish the day at even par, 70.
After tying for third at the Duck Invitational, Brandon Baumgarten earned his first start on the Oregon line-up, and posted a 73, 3-over par.
Stanford renamed its tournament, formerly known as the United States Intercollegiate, to The Goodwin in honor of former head men’s golf coach Wally Goodwin who coached the likes of Tiger Woods and current UO head coach Casey Martin.
The Ducks return to the Stanford Golf Course on Saturday, March 28, at 8 a.m. (PT) for day two of The Goodwin.
