PORTLAND, Ore. – Brando Tessar matched a career high with eight strikeouts to lead No. 25 Oregon to a 3-0 win over Portland at Joe Etzel Field on Wednesday.
Tessar (2-0) allowed just four hits, two of which didn’t leave the infield, in seven innings to pick up the win. Garrett Cleavinger struck out the side in the eighth and Jake Reed picked up his seventh save retiring three of the four hitters he faced in the ninth.
Oregon (24-10) took the lead for good in the top of the fourth inning with back-to-back doubles by Tyler Baumgartner and Mitchell Tolman. Baumgartner started the rally with a one-out shot down the right field line and Tolman picked up his team-best 32nd RBI with a double to left center three pitches later to give UO a 1-0 lead.
The Ducks built on the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth on three straight hits to open the inning. Jack Kruger started the rally with an infield hit and moved to third on a double by Nick Catalano down the left field line. Mark Karaviotis drove in both runners with a sharp single to center to give Oregon a 3-0 lead.
Tessar took it from there retiring the final 11 batters he faced before giving way to Oregon’s set-up man and closer.
Baumgartner went 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead the Ducks’ offense.
Oregon returns to action with a four home games in four days starting Friday. UO hosts UC Riverside in a three game series Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Ducks then host San Diego in a single game on Monday at 1 p.m.
