Two major college football awards released preseason watch lists Monday, and both included Oregon senior linebacker Derrick Malone.
Malone, who led the Ducks with 105 tackles in 2013, was named to the watch lists of both the Butkus Award and the Rotary Lombardi Award. Teammates Hroniss Grasu and Tyler Johnstone also are candidates for the Lombardi Award.
The Butkus Award is given to the nation’s best linebacker, based on “athletic achievement and service to the community.” The Lombardi Award is bestowed upon a down lineman or linebacker who “shows leadership, courage, desire, respect for authority and discipline.”
Malone was previously named to the preseason watch list for the Nagurski Trophy as the nation’s best defensive player. UO senior center Grasu and junior left tackle Johnstone previously appeared on the Outland Trophy watch list for linemen, and Grasu also is a candidate for the Rimington Trophy as the nation’s top center.
This is the second straight season in which Grasu and Johnstone both made the Outland and Lombardi watch lists. Oregon also had a Butkus Award preseason candidate in 2013, Boseko Lokombo.
