MADISON, Wis. – Oregon fell in its season opener to Wisconsin, 1-0 at McClimon Complex.

Despite an evenly matched game, Wisconsin’s Cara Walls found the back of the goal at 54:07 as she beat goalkeeper Abby Steele off the far post. Steele made two saves in the match.

What it means: Despite the score sheet, the Ducks’ offense came out ready to go after a successful spring season. Oregon started the game strong with four shots and a corner kick within the first 13 minutes. The Badgers narrowly outshot the Ducks, 15-12, but both teams had six chances on corner kicks. Junior forward Kristen Parr led the team with four shots while senior forward Shanelle Simien had two shots on goal.

After the Wisconsin goal, Oregon pushed more with a series of corner kicks and shots to try and find the equalizer.

Stat of the match: Each team had six corner opportunities, but five of Oregon’s came in the second half. The final four corners for the Ducks came in just over a five-minute span as Lilly Archer took each kick.

Fresh faces: Newcomers played important minutes against the Badgers. Freshman midfielder Miranda Schulz earned her first career start in her first career game as a Duck. In the 25th minute, sophomore midfielder Marlo Sweatman, who spent her first season at Florida State, and freshman midfielder Abby Morrow entered the game.

Freshman forward Zoe Higgins made her way into the match in the second half as the Ducks tried to find the back of the goal. Although not a newcomer, junior Kelsey Foo made her first appearance in a match since 2012 after missing last season to injury.

Up next: The Ducks (0-1-0) return to McClimon Complex Sunday at 9:30 a.m. PT to take on Milwaukee (0-1-0). The Panthers also began their season Friday, falling 5-0 to Tennessee.
