DE PANNE, Belgium - Simon Stevens continued his upset-minded summer on the ITF Pro Circuit in Belgium and defeated Jonas Merckx in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 at the Belgium F13 Futures in De Panne, Belgium earlier this week. The win marks the second time this summer that Stevens has upset an opponent who is highly ranked by the ATP.

Merckx was ranked No. 688 in the ATP before Stevens ousted him in the first round. Merckx is a fellow Belgian who began 2013 ranked 838th and has shown continual growth throughout the past two seasons.

Stevens advanced to the round of 16 and lost to Omar Salman 2-6, 3-6.

Earlier this summer Stevens won a match over Pol Toledo of Spain – the 586th-ranked player at the time. The incoming freshman defeated Toledo in straight sets and advanced to the round of 16 at the Belgian F4 Futures.
