1977 Men's Cross Country Team
Position: Hall of Fame Inductee
Other Position: 1998 Inductee, Cross Country (1977)

A gutsy 1977 cross country squad, coached by Bill Dellinger, broke the stranglehold foreign-dominated UTEP had on the NCAA title. Also Pac-8 Conference and district winners, the seven Duck runners — Alberto Salazar, Don Clary, Rudy Chapa, Bill McChesney, Matt Centrowitz, Bruce Nelson and Art Boileau — combined to bring the firstplace trophy back to Eugene. Top NCAA finishers were Salazar ninth, Clary 12th, Chapa at 27th and McChesney 28th. This was Dellinger’s fourth group of NCAA champions.

The legendary Salazar later was a marathon world-record holder, an event he won at New York City and twice at Boston. McChesney earned a U.S. Olympic berth at 5000 meters. Two-time Canadian Olympian Boileau won the L.A. Marathon two times and was second at Boston. Chapa was a NCAA 5,000 champ, and mile king Centrowitz became track coach at American University prior to winning four USA Track & Field 5,000-meter titles.
