Bill Hayward
Position: Hall of Fame Inductee
Other Position: 1992 Inductee, Track and Field Coach 1868-1947

Hired in 1904 as Oregon’s first permanent coach, he spurred and developed good track athletes as world recordholders. Known as Colonel Bill at Oregon, he started his string of outstanding athletes with Olympic sprinter Dan Kelly in
1908 and coached the U.S. team in Stockholm four years later. He would be associated with six Olympic teams in his career.

He also nurtured the careers of miler Ralph Hill, javelinist George Varoff and high jumper Les Steers, who broke world records during their careers. His teams dominated Northwest track into the 1940s and his innovative coaching techniques
prompted his installation as an institution on the Eugene campus.
