The 22-year Oregon assistant football coach helped the Ducks lead the country in defense in 1959, allowing 50 points for the entire year. Playing as a prep and a collegian under Len Casanova, was named to Santa Clara's hall of fame in both football and baseball. Playing in the Sugar Bowl, Roche coached with Casanova at his alma mater, Pittsburgh and Oregon, and guided the Ducks' defense to berths in the Rose, Liberty and sun Bowls. Also served a short stint as interim baseball coach.
