It turned out to be the last hurrah, but Oregon gymnastics was in the process of earning a national reputation similar to that of its track and field programs. In 1980, the Flying Ducks were literally unstoppable. They plowed through 17 dual meets and rugged invitationals at San Jose State and UCLA and won a fourth straight conference crown, earning regional coach of the year honors for its designer, Bill Ballester.
Oregon’s four-year run at the top of the collegiate gymnastics scene ended that year with a third-place NCAA finish after three consecutive seasons placing fourth nationally. The Flying Ducks broke 12 of 13 school records that year and James Yuhashi and Randy Beard earned all-America honors. There have been few sadder days in the history of Oregon athletics than when the program had to be
dropped a year later because of financial contraints.
