He was Oregon’s first all-America quarterback, bringing the passing game to Hayward Field. And, he led the Ducks to the Cotton Bowl in 1948 as well. He passed for 1,949 yards and 18 touchdowns during his two-year Oregon career, embedding the fiery, competitive nature. The 9-2 record of 1948 is one of the best in the school’s history.
As a player, few rivaled his ability to win. He carried the Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles to the only NFL titles those teams have ever won. Later, he coached 12½ seasons with Atlanta and Minnesota, taking expansion teams in each case from ground zero. He has been selected to the National Football Foundation and Pro Football Hall of Fames.
