John Warren
Position: Hall of Fame Inductee
Other Position: 1993 Inductee, Coach (1936-1952)

No coach developed more Oregon athletes than Warren. He embraced the job of freshman coach in football and basketball for seven seasons until the first-year players became eligible for varsity play in 1943. He coached track and baseball as well during his 16 years with the Ducks and helped keep the athletic department afloat during World War II, earning the nickname of “Honest John.” The freshman teams had records of 108-12 in basketball and 18-12 in football under his tutelage.

When Howard Hobson was granted wartime leave in 1944-45, he took over the basketball team and guided the Ducks to the NCAA Western Regional playoffs and a 30-13 record, mythically finishing fifth nationally. He took over for good two years later and coached four seasons, bringing heralded Jungle Jim Loscutoff to Oregon. He directed a draft-crippled 1942 Oregon football team and was an assistant football coach during his first two years as head basketball coach, including the
Cotton Bowl season.
