DALLAS, Texas - The University of Oregon women's soccer team suffered only its second loss of the season Sunday as host SMU won 2-0 in the Mi Cocina Soccer Cup. Sunday's outcome lowered Oregon's record to 5-2 and SMU improved to 7-2.

Despite the final score, the Duck offense still held their own Sunday and led in shots by a 15-13 margin and shots on goal by an 11-8 edge. SMU scored once in each half, as Lauren Mussallem tapped in near the goal at 14:25 on a soft centering pass by Olivia O'Rear, then O'Rear found the left corner of the net at 70:45 on an assist by Mussallem and Kim Harvey.  Oregon also led in corner kicks (4-2) and also fouls (20-18).

Sophomore forward Mele French paced the Ducks in shots (4) and shots on goal (4), and fellow soph Nicole Garbin added three shots and two shots on goal. Other Ducks logging shots included starters Cristan Higa (1), Lindsey Werdell (2), Erin Engelhardt (1), Carlie Ashcraft (1), and reserves Sabrina DeMonte (1), Andrea Valadez (1) and Kelly Baird (1). Sunday's outing marked the first start for junior midfielder Erin Engelhardt - a transfer from Virginia and an NCAA tourney vet from 2001.

"We controlled the second half, but we gave away a 20-minute period in the first half where we were very poor mentally, and they converted their chances more," Oregon women's coach Bill Steffen said. "We dominated aspects of the game, but we have to learn that dominating isn't enough. We have to more than just out-possess them, but also outscore them. Mele worked to create several chances up front, and Dana (Richardson, freshman defender) had a decent game. She got forward and helped out a lot and helped generate some attacks. Erin did some nice things, and it was nice to get her some minutes. She's very sophisticated and very attack-oriented, and hopefully we can work off that."

In goal, Oregon sophomore keeper Domenique Lainez made six saves in 90 minutes of duty, and SMU's Amanda Clark wrapped up 11 saves - only one shy of the Ducks' opponent record (12).

SMU's Lauren Mussallem led the hosts in shots (4) and tied for the high in shots on goal with Olivia O'Rear (2) and Amanda Jordan (2).

Sunday's match was the second for the Ducks in the tournament hosted by SMU. The Ducks fell in their opener on Friday to No. 4 Texas A&M, 4-0, while SMU edged Colorado College, 1-0 in the evening nightcap. A&M plays Colorado College Sunday afternoon in the tourney's finale. More tournament information is available at the www.smumustangs.com website.

Looking ahead, the Ducks make another California non-conference swing with stops at 2002 NCAA vet Loyola Marymount, Fri., Sept. 26 at 7 pm, and at Cal State Fullerton, Sun., Sept. 28 at 1 pm.
