Tryout dates are April 21, 22, & 23.  Video tapes are accepted, but your physical presence is best.  Cuts made Tuesday and Wednesday.  Finals on Thursday.


TRYOUT REQUIRMENTS 

  1. All candidates must be accepted to the U of O before tryouts.  For online application to U of O:  You must earn and maintain a minimum 2.25 accumulative grade average at U. of O. 
  2. All women and men must be physically fit and be proportioned height to weight.
  3. Women auditioning for the dance squad must be excellent dancers with emphasis on jazz, funk, and hip-hop including the performance of proper technique in leaps and turns. Dancers must learn routines very quickly and perform with energy, enthusiasm, and showmanship.  Tumbling is a "plus," but not required.
  4. All women auditioning for the stunt squad must show their tumbling skills. An unspotted standing back handspring or standing back tuck is required for all returning stunters.  All new stunters will have one year on the squad to learn and perfect either a standing back handspring or standing back tuck at the next year's tryouts.  However, those not achieving this skill by the time the team begins competition practice in December will not compete at Nationals. Stunters must also be good dancers and have excellent cheer motion technique.  You may stunt with any veteran squad member you choose.  The minimum requirements are toss chair, toss hands, extension, and liberty.  Successful candidates will exhibit enthusiasm, energy, and showmanship.
  5. Women stunters should weigh approximately 120 pounds or less to ensure the physical safety of male squad members. 
  6. Men must show a minimum of three stunts, including a toss hands, toss hands extension, liberty.  You may show as many stunt sequences as you wish.  You may choose your stunt partner from the veteran women.  Men will be chosen primarily by stunting ability.  However, those men not experienced in cheerleading or stunting will be judged on potential for success and general athleticism.  An unspotted standing back handspring or standing back tuck is required for all returning stunters.  All new stunters will have one year on the squad to learn and perfect either a standing back handspring or standing back tuck at the next year's tryouts.  However, those not achieving this skill by the time the team begins competition practice in December will not compete at Nationals.  Men must show good motion technique, have a clean-cut appearance and good character.
  7. Selected cheerleaders must be willing to report to practice August 13, 2003, and incur their own living expenses until the dorms, or fraternity and sorority houses are available.  (Many cheerleaders in the past have opened their homes to out-of-area cheerleaders until permanent living quarters are ready.)
  8. Cheerleaders selected for the traveling squad, and who earn scholarships, are expected to commit to all holiday games between Thanksgiving and Christmas during their Winter break.  In addition, all cheerleaders chosen to compete must be willing to spend extra practice time while preparing for national competition.

NOTE** The judges will choose a maximum of 12 stunt couples and 12 dancers.  All current cheerleaders will be required to audition except during the first night's preliminary round.   Tryouts are closed to the public.  No video cameras are allowed.  Please do not invite supporters.


 TRYOUT STRUCTURE

1. April 21, 2004 5:45 - 10:00 p.m. McArthur Court

Everyone is issued a permanent tryout number before we begin. This includes veterans.

Preliminary tryout for men and women: Veteran women will be stunting with new men during this segment. A short dance routine and cheer will be taught to the new women. You will have about 15 minutes to practice after learning the routine. Then, you will perform altogether several times for the judges. Stunt girls will be judged separately from dance girls. New men will be taught a cheer using proper arm motion technique. After the dance judging is complete, those women who wish to compete for a stunting position will choose a stunt partner and begin practice. Dancers may use the remainder of the evening to practice their original dance routines.

2. April 22, 2004 6:00 - 10:00 p.m.

McArthur CourtIn the second round preliminaries, women will individually perform an original dance routine one minute in length, preceded by a brief interview. Please record your song on a clean cassette at the beginning of the tape, or bring a CD with the number of your song clearly marked. (Women stunters will perform stunting and tumbling right after their individual dance performance.) Dancers who wish to show their tumbling skills may do so either before or after their dance performance. Everyone will tumble on the hardwood floor. There are no mats provided. We will provide a spotter for your safety, but do not attempt any tumbling sequence beyond your abilities. SECOND CUTS ANNOUNCED!

3. April 23, 2004 Finals 6:00 - 10:30 p.m. McArthur Court

  • Men and women stunters will practice with their partners from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. 
  • Women auditioning for the dance squad will learn an advanced dance routine from 6:00 - 8:00.
  • Men and Women auditioning for the stunt squad will again show stunting and tumbling in front of the judges from 7:00 - 8:30 for their final tryout.
  • Dancers' finals tryout will consist of performing the advanced dance routine for the judges from 8:30 to approximately 9:30 in groups of five.

Selected candidates will be notified by phone April 12, 2003.

What to Wear:

Women:
  • Crop top or sports bra (T-shirt over for interview, if desired)Short shorts (no lycra or spandex except under shorts for stunting)
  • No black-soled shoes allowed. Stunters wear cheer shoes.
  • Always have your hair and makeup game ready.  Ponytails are notnecessary.  Fix up.  It does matter how you present yourself!
  • Cover any visible tattoos and take out body piercings. (earrings okay)
Men:
  • T-shirts, shorts or warm-ups, short hair, clean shaven, no earrings
  • No black-soled shoes allowed.


TRYOUT CLINICS

We are offering two dance and stunt clinics before tryouts for you to learn more about U of O cheerleading.  Please wear your workout clothes and join us at the Moshofsky Center (indoor practice facility) next to Autzen Stadium.  Enter the Mo Center one door to the left of the entrance to the Duck Shop. 

These clinics are not mandatory and no pre-registration is required. Just show up and participate. You need to sign a release waiver, you can either download a copy at the top of the page and bring a copy or sign it at the clinic. If you are under 18 this must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.

Dates:       Sunday, February 15 and February 22; both days  2:00 - 5:00 pm
