Pac-10 Statistical Matchup
Thursday, November 5, 2:15 p.m. PDT

The college football regular season is two-thirds complete, and while non-conference stats accumulated back in September are nice and all, they aren't completely relevant this time of year. So we've stripped them out and will take a look at how the Ducks and Cardinal stack up in league play.

I've read a couple of different preview articles that talk about the Ducks' susceptibility against the run by citing UO's rushing defense as the sixth-ranked in the Pac-10. Oregon has its work cut out for them with Stanford's ground game, to be sure, but the Ducks' are actually the No. 2 defense in the conference against the run in Pac-10 play, which has included games against the likes of USC and Cal.

Breaking it down further, the Ducks have allowed just two rushing touchdowns through five games - which is five fewer than any of the other seven teams to have played five games. UO is allowing 3.2 yards per carry in Pac-10 play, or 0.5 fewer yards than every team but Arizona State.

UO's overall rushing D numbers have taken a hit due to UO's first two games of the year, when Boise State ran for 164 (on 59 attempts for an average 2.8 yards per carry) and Purdue gained 170 spurred by Ralph Bolden's 123-yard effort.

That's just one example of the difference between overall numbers and Pac-10 numbers. In reality, the only thing that really matters is your last play and your next play, but it's hard not to quantify.
